.h ͸
.h Installation
.h ;

The installation procedure for FoneFile is quite simple. The package
includes a program, "INSTALL.EXE", which automates the entire process.
You will need about 500kb of available disk space on the hard drive on
which you plan to install FoneFile.

The exact steps you need to take will depend on how you received the
FoneFile package.

.r INSTALLING FROM DISKETTES

To install from diskette(s), you need to perform the following steps.

o Place FoneFile distribution diskette "Disk 1" in the
      appropriate diskette drive.

o Execute the "INSTALL.EXE" program on the distribution diskette.
For example, if the distribution diskette is on drive A:, type
      the MS-DOS command, "a:install".

o Follow the instructions presented by the installation program.
You will have a chance to approve installation before any changes
are actually made to the contents of your hard drive. The
program will ask you for a destination directory, and will copy
the FoneFile files to that directory. If you so direct it,
the installation program will install executable programs and
documentation in other directories of your choice. It will make
no other changes; specifically, it will not modify your
      autoexec.bat or config.sys files.

.r INSTALLING FROM A HARD DRIVE

If you downloaded FoneFile from a BBS (or received it in the form of
archive files from some other source), you will need to perform the
following steps.

o Extract the contents of the archive file(s) in a temporary
directory on your hard drive. The procedure for doing this
varies, depending on the form in which you received the package.
In all likelihood, the fact that you are reading this text means
that you already have the necessary tools and knowledge to
perform this step. If not, you should be able to obtain
directions for this from the same source from which you received
      the package.

o Execute the "INSTALL.EXE" program which you have extracted. For
example, if the temporary directory into which you have extracted
the <product> package is C:\TEMPDIR, you would execute the MS-DOS
      command, "c:\tempdir\install".

o Follow the instructions presented by the installation program.
You will have a chance to approve installation before any changes
are actually made to the contents of your hard drive. The
program will ask you for a destination directory, and will copy
the FoneFile files to that directory. If you so direct it, the
installation program will install executable programs and
documentation in other directories of your choice. It will make
no other changes; specifically, it will not modify your
      autoexec.bat or config.sys files.

When you're satisfied that the installation was successful, you should
delete the temporary directory FROM which you installed FoneFile
(C:\TEMPDIR, in the above discussion), including all its contents.

YOU'RE READY TO GO

Once you've complete the installation you can type FONEFILE from the DOS
prompt to load the main program into memory. See the rest of this document
for special features and other information you need to properly evaluate
FoneFile. We hope you enjoy the program.

.i Special Network Considerations: Please read the special instructions
.i at the end of this document if you are performing a network installation

.h ͸
.h Configuration
.h ;

The installation program will allow you to set some configuration options.
You can also change these options by pressing <F10> from the main FoneFile
summary display screen, or clicking the RIGHT mouse button.
Most of the options will be self explanatory, but there are a few that you
should pay special attention to:

   1. The Hot-Key: This is the key used to 'pop-up' FoneFile once
it is loaded into memory. By default, the hot-key
is <ALT>+T. You can change this to any combination
of the <Ctrl>, <Alt>, or <Ctrl> AND <Alt> key and
                        any other ALPHABETIC key (A-Z)

Some combination of keys can cause unexpected
results. For example, <CTRL>+S usually pauses the
PC's display. If you choose a HotKey that produces
undesirably results, reboot your computer and start
FoneFile with the /DEFAULT switch. ie, type:
FONEFILE /DEFAULT This tells the program to bypass
all user defined options and allows you to re-enter
                        them through the configuration menu.

   2. Use EMS: FoneFile is a large program, but despite its size,
it only takes 6k of conventional memory. When
the program is loaded into memory, it needs to
'swap' the main portion of its code to either
expanded memory, or to the disk. Using expanded
(EMS) memory will yield the best performance. If
your PC has expanded memory, we highly suggest that
you allow FoneFile to swap its code to EMS rather
than disk. (See note below about the swap location)

   3. Default Values: There are 4 fields that you can pre-define to make
data entry a bit faster. These fields are:
                        - The City Name
                        - The State
                        - The Zip Code, and
                        - The Telephone Area Code.
During data entry, if any of these fields contain
data, that data is displayed and the operator can
simply press the <Enter> key to accept that value.

.i Other features:

You can start FoneFile without using the TSR option by using the command
line switch /NOTSR: For Example, type FONEFILE /NOTSR. Other command line
switches allow you to define other behaviors of the program. Type:
FONEFILE /? for a list of options.

If you should get an error (unlikely) FoneFile will abort and return you to
DOS. The flag that FoneFile uses to see if it is already installed
will still be set, so you must clear the flag before FoneFile will allow
you to re-install it. To do so, type: FONEFILE /CLEAR

If FoneFile needs to swap to the hard drive, it will create a hidden, read-
only file on your drive. You can specify the directory location for this
file by using the DOS SET command to create an environment variable, FFSWAP.
For example, to have FoneFile use the directory C:\TEMP you can place the
command: SET FFSWAP=C:\TEMP in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file. If FoneFile does
not find this variable, it will look for a simple TEMP= variable. If this
does not exist, FoneFile will create the file in your FONEFILE directory,
where the program FONEFILE.EXE resides.

.h ͸
.h Networks
.h ;

The installation program needs to create an administrative subdirectory
and optionally a sample directory. In order for the install program
to do this, you must be logged into the network with an account that
has sufficient rights. It is recommended that you use a SUPERVISOR
account to install FoneFile.

Once the program and files are copied to the network drive, you will
have the option of setting up a default configuration. Please refer to
the User Guild for a complete description of each option.

.i ͸
.i Private vs. Shared files
.i ;

The installation program will create a subdirectory in the main FoneFile
directory called "SHARED". Any file created in this directory is available
to all users. Records can be added, viewed, and deleted from these files by
all persons on the network.
As each person enters the CONFIGURATION menu, and SAVES a personal
options selection, a new directory is created for that person based on their
LOGIN name. Private files can now be created in these directories, and will
be hidden from all other users. (The one exception to this is the SUPERVISOR
login name. Supervisor equivalency will NOT have access to the private
files.) It is important that each login name be no longer than 12
characters log in order to assure proper naming conventions for these private
directories.

.h ͸
.h Misc:
.h ;

Due to the very nature of TSR (Terminate and Stay Resident) programs,
FONEFILE will not work with most GRAPHIC based programs, programs that
control the standard keyboard routines, and a few other programs that
do not conform 100% to all DOS rules. A few program conflicts that have
been reported are:

o DOSSHELL (Microsoft - Can cause PC to lock up)
o The Norton Utilities v7.0 (Symantec - Can reboot the PC)
     o GeoWorks Ensamble (Graphics incompatibility)

If you have any troubles with FONEFILE in any other programs, please

will make every effort to make FONEFILE compatible with as many
software applications as possible.
