Welcome to TOP, the premier DOS command enhancement utility! Some things new users may want to try are listed below. To scroll this window, either press the left mouse button on the scroll bars to the right, or press or . closes the window. Typing 'WELCOME' at the command line will reopen it. Since you're running this from a Read-only media, there are a few features that we can't enable, all having to do with automatically saving your setup. For complete TOP functionality, please install TOP on your hard drive. In the mean time, feel free to test drive, poke around, and otherwise make merry with our program. Please DON'T just copy the files to your drive, use our INSTALL program. During install, setup information is automatically determined and used to help you customize TOP for your system. To install, change to the TOP directory and type: 'INSTALL' We like to think TOP is simple, easy to use, yet powerful. But the shear magnitude of features that TOP provides can at first seem intimidating! If you're new to TOP, please take a minute to read this message for some "getting started" hints. What you're reading from now is called the VIEW window. It can be used to display any file in ascii text or hex mode. Right now you are VIEWing a file called WELCOME.TXT. To VIEW another file, type 'VIEW filename' at the command line. Or select a file name from anywhere on the screen with the mouse and "drag" it into this window (more on mouse use later). Remember you can type 'WELCOME' to restart this message any time if it goes away during your experimentation. By the way, scroll down to the end of this message to find out how to keep this VIEW window from coming up each time you start TOP. Pressing starts HELP (and closes it). To go to a particular topic, type a few letters of the topic on the command line and press , or just click the left mouse button on the topic. HELP can be started at any time, and does not prevent continued typing at the command line. HELP is both context and DOS version sensitive. Speaking of command lines, notice you can now actually edit what you typed. Type typing some characters, then use the left and right arrow keys to move into the command line and change what's there. Pressing the key toggles between insert and overwrite mode, and pressing will clear the whole line. There's more, see HELP for _KEYS. While you're pressing the arrow keys, notice that if you press the up arrow, the previously issued command is recalled! More presses recall older and older commands, or type a few letters and press . The command containing a match to those letters is recalled! TOP has many other features, and almost every feature TOP has is controlled by running the included setup program called TOPSET. Change to the TOP directory and type 'TOPSET', or just hit . Complete on line help for every setting is available once started. Mouse users: Press and hold the left and right button together to get the window control popup menu. Also see HELP for wCHORD. Use the popup menu to start or bring to front any TOP window. All TOP window HELP topics start with a small w, and mouse users are encouraged to read all these topics. Click on the three parallel lines in the upper left corner of any window to change it's settings. The mouse can be used to cut and paste text from any- where on the screen to the command line or into, be- tween, or from any TOP windows. For example, a file- name can be selected and dragged into this window, causing the file's contents to be displayed. Or a filename can be dragged from one FILES widow to another, causing that file to be copied or moved to the displayed directory. See HELP for wMOUSE and related topics. By now maybe you're gulping and wondering where's the manual? It's in a file called 'MANUAL.TXT', located in the TOP installation directory. You can print in by typing: c:\top> copy manual.txt prn You can also read it on line by typing: c:\top> view manual.txt Be warned: the manual is nearly 200 pages long (and you have the short version)! Registered users receive a 300+ page bound and typeset hardcopy manual. This VIEW window is specified to come up every time TOP starts by having the command 'WELCOME' in the [InitialCommands] section of TOP.INI. To keep this window from coming up every time you start TOP, you can remove or comment out that command by editing the TOP.INI file. Or hit to start TOPSET, select [InitialCommands], scroll to the last line and press to delete it. saves the change.
