  INITIAL SETUP & INSTALLATION
  ----------------------------
MASS must be run from a hard disk on a computer system with at
least 640k of RAM. The printer should be a dot matrix or laser printer
with standard IBM or Epson dot matrix printer code acceptance. (Refer
to your printer manual for dip switch settings that can make your
printer compatible with one of these two standards.) The program was
designed to run on a color monitor, but it should also work on most
monochrome monitors that are driven by a hercules graphics card.

If you want your sales receipts to be on smaller paper, you must
have a 40 column printer equivalent to the Star Micronics receipt
    printer.

You will need about 1 MB of free space on your hard drive to
initially install MASS, however, depending on the number of customers,
invoices, and inventory items that you enter into the databases will
ultimately determine how much hard drive space you will actually need
to run MASS on your computer. Also, as you will learn, MASS makes a
new set of data files each month when you do the monthly closeout. This
takes up additional space, but you'll find this is a valuable tool in
tracking monthly transactions and for providing an alternate backup to
the one you will be making on floppy disks.

Before you actually install MASS on to your computer's hard drive,
you should first make a back-up copy that can be used as your "working
copy" by using the DOS diskcopy command. (You can also use the original
set of disks to make copies for friends then later on.)

Second, using your working copy of MASS, Version 15, put Disk 1
into a floppy drive, then at the drive's DOS prompt type INSTALL A: C:
(or D:) and press the Enter (Return) key. This will place the program
into a subdirectory called MASS15 on your hard drive (the C: or D:
    drive).

Note: If you want to install MASS Version 15 on another hard drive
(other than the C: or D: drive), the install batch file will not
work properly for creating the MASS startup file for the root of
your C: drive. In this case you will have to create your own
batch file or edit the MASS.BAT file that you'll find in the
root directory of the C: drive. Change the D: in this file to
the drive where you installed MASS. Refer to your DOS manual on
how to edit or make one of these.

  STARTING THE PROGRAM
  --------------------
At the C> prompt, simply type MASS and press the Enter key. The
data files come with sample data already in them so that you can print
reports and see how the program works. Before you actually start using
the program for your business, you should go into U)tilities, select O
to change program settings, then 6 to create empty data files. Empty all
the data files so that none of the sample data mixes with the actual data
you will be entering for your own business.

  COMPANY INFORMATION
  -------------------
If this is the first time that you've loaded the program it will
display the Shareware message screen and then ask you information about
your company or business, such as:

              1. Your company's name, address and phone number.
              2. A comment to appear with your company's address.
              3. A slogan about your business (if you have one).
              4. Selection for a thank you message on sales receipts.
              5. Selection of standard size or 40 column sized receipts.
              6. Your state's sales tax percentage.
              7. Sales tax tracking based on when invoiced or when payed.

Don't worry if you make a mistake entering this information, since
it can be edited in the Utility Programs (that will be described later).

Once the program starts, it will ask you if the system date is
correct. It is important to ensure that it is since much of the sales
data, such as invoicing and receipt of payments, is date dependent.
The program offers a monthly payment plan (of six months) and service
charges if payments are late, so it is important that you enter the date
here that represents the date of the transactions that you will be
    entering into the system's databases.

After the initial startup, the shareware message will only be
displayed when you enter the utility programs to edit your company
    information.

  PROGRAM OPERATION
  -----------------
The `Main Menu' has seven different selections to choose from:

    ÚÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ¿
    ³ C)ash I)inventory P)ayment R)eports U)tilities M)onthly Q)uit ³
    ÀÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÙ

In general, the C)ash selection allows you to perform your daily
cash register routines, such as entering and editing sales, and
balancing your cash drawer. I)nventory allows you to enter, edit and
print reports on your product inventory. P)ayment lets you enter pay-
ments on open invoices, print customer activity and do some marketing
activities. R)eports is general customer info, letters and labels, and
weekly sales reports. U)tilities allows you to backup and restore your
data files, a fix your data files routine, customer and invoice
editing and purging (deleting) routines, a way to change your program
settings, and a program for editing your company information. M)onthly
is the routine you must run at the end of each month to prepare your
data files for the next month's transactions. And finally, Q)uit is
what it appears to be. It stops the program, closes the databases and
    takes you back to DOS.

You can either press the letter of the selection you want to go
to, such as I or i to go into the inventory programs, or you can use
the left and right arrow keys to move to the selection of your choice
and then press Enter (Return) to execute that option.

The program relies on six fields of data to inter-relate the data-
bases and to find the appropriate records. These are; the customer
name and phone number which you must enter, the customer number which
the program automatically generates, the invoice number which the
program automatically generates, and the department number and stock
number which you must enter for each inventory item your business
maintains. Thus, four of the fields are your responsibility to enter
correctly. Since no one is perfect, the editing routines in the U)tility
programs are provided to correct your mistakes. If at any time the
program fails to find a record that you're sure you've entered, go to
U)tilities, then F. This will check for file damage, delete damaged
records and rebuild indeces. You may have to re-enter some transactions
if the files were actually damaged. To check, go to R)eports, then G, E.

  PROGRAM OPERATION (Cont'd)
  --------------------------
Now let's take a look at the Main Menu selections in detail, one
    at a time.

    C)ash
    -----
This is the cash register programs. When you select C)ash, you
    can then press:

N for entering a new sale,
E for editing a sale (that has already been entered),
R to re-print a sales receipt (that may have jammed in the
printer or had to be edited),
V to view an invoice on screen (in case the customer questions
what was charged to him or her on a particular invoice), or
S to stop and return to the Main Menu.

Now all of these are essentially self-explanatory, however, if you
choose N for entering a new sale, you will then be permitted to:

            Generate a sales receipt -
              1. With the customer's name and address (which you must use
if the customer will be making payments or you want to
track the customer using the marketing programs)
              2. Without customer information (just a general over the
                  counter sale)

day and to see if the ending balance matches the daily
                  sales figure)

Selecting either 1 or 2 above will take you into the cash register
program that allows you to generate a sales receipt based on the
purchases that the customer has made. If 1 was chosen, it will also
check the customer database to see if this is a new customer. If it is,
it will then add this customer to the database. If it isn't, it will
simply edit the current customer record. It will also ask if the items
are to be sent to a shipping address different from the customer's
address. This will be helpful to you, especially if some of your sales
are mail order. If 2 was chosen, the program will simply lump the year
to date sales figures into a customer record with the name "OTC Sales",
customer number of "CASH", and phone number "999-999-9999".

  PROGRAM OPERATION (Cont'd)
  --------------------------
    C)ash (cont'd)
    --------------
Also, if you get your Sales Clerks to enter their first name or
initials into the Sales Clerk Identification field, you will be able
to get a sales report sorted by Clerk in the R)eports program. This will
be helpful to see who is generating the sales for you or to also be able
to pay a sales commission to your personnel based on the total dollar
figure of the sales they've made for the month.

Once you get past the Clerk entry, the program then really gets
into generating the customer sale. It first allows entry of up to 10
different items and automatically pulls the description and price of
each item from your inventory records (if they are stocked items).
Otherwise, you can enter the description and price in manually to get
it on the sales receipt. You also have the option of looking up the
item from your inventory records. What this means is if you say "Yes"
that you want to look for the item, the program will display a window
showing a list of stock numbers and item descriptions. At this window
you can press the "PgDn" key to see more items (if they exist) or if
you've already paged down and want to go back, press the "PgUp" key.
If you see the item on the list, use the up and down arrow keys to move
the curser until the item is highlighted. Then press the Enter (Return)
key and the item will be inserted into your sales list. If you don't
find the item during the lookup, press the "End" key and it will take
you back to sales list and allow you to manually enter the description
and price. Note, if you've departmentalized your inventory and only
want to look up that department, make sure you enter the 2 digit depart-
ment number before you do the lookup option. Then rather than paging
down through ALL of your inventory items when the lookup window appears,
it will only list those items in the designated department.

After entering the items, the program wants to know if the entries
made are correct. If not, simply press 'N' and the program will go
back through the items line by line to allow you to make corrections.

It will then ask if it is a Standard or Discount sale. If you
press 'S', the prices will remain the same. If you press 'D', it will
ask for the discount percentage and then automatically reduce all the
prices for the listed items by that amount. A note will also appear on
the sales receipt, indicating how much the items were discounted.

  PROGRAM OPERATION (Cont'd)
  --------------------------
    C)ash (cont'd)
    --------------
Continuing on, the program will next want to know if the payment
will be by cash, check or charge (A, B or C). This is kept for
historical purposes and to prompt you for credit card information if
it is a charge (C) transaction and credit card data is not in the
    customer's record.

Next you will be asked if it is a taxable sale. If you enter 'N'
it will not calculate any tax. If you enter 'Y', it will ask if the
full amount of the sale is taxable. If it is, simply press 'Y' and tax
will automatically be added on the full amount of the sale at the per-
centage rate that you entered in your company information. If you enter
'N', it will ask you to enter the amount that is taxable. This will
permit you to enter service charges, such as delivery or labor which is
usually non-taxable, on the same invoice as your inventory sales which
    in most states is taxable.

The program will then display the sales totals and ask how much
payment the customer is giving. If it is a partial payment, then the
program is set up to spread the final payments out over a 6 month
period. If it is for the exact amount, then a regular sales receipt
can be printed. If it is more the the total sale price, the amount of
change to be given to the customer will be calculated and displayed on
the screen and printed on the receipt.

         -----
You can generate your own specialized reports should you own a
database program that is compatible with Ashton-Tate's dBase, such
as dBase III or IV, DBXL, Foxbase, etc., since the data files that
MASS builds are dBase compatible. The only thing you have to be
careful of is to get the right file for the right month. That is,
a file generation number is used to store the data for each month
and increments by 1 each month you do a closeout. You can then
copy these files off for historical recordkeeping or erase them.
For file descriptions, select U)tilities, then O, then 1.

for the new month and carries forward customer and open invoice data
for processing in the new month.

During this program, it will also ask you if it is the end of the
quarter and end of the year, which then sets it to perform quarterly
reports or year end closeout functions as is necessary. It also prints
a list of transactions for the month, and a summary report that can be
used to enter receivables information into a separate accounting package.

  ----------------------
Users of MASS Retail Sales must accept this disclaimer of warranty:

"MASS Retail Sales is supplied as is. The author disclaims all
warranties, expressed or implied, including, without limitation,

quential, which may result from the use of MASS Retail Sales."

MASS Retail Sales is a "shareware program" and is provided at no
charge to the user for evaluation. Feel free to share it with your
friends, but please do not give it away altered or as part of
another system. The essence of "user-supported" software is to
provide personal computer users with quality software without
high prices, and yet to provide incentive for programmers to
continue to develop new products. If you find this program useful
and find that you are using MASS Retail Sales and continue to use
MASS Retail Sales after a reasonable trial period, you must make
the registration payment to Reed Consulting Services. The regi-
stration fee will license one copy for use on any one computer
at any one time. You must treat this software just like a book.
An example is that this software may be used by any number of
people and may be freely moved from one computer location to
another, so long as there is no possibility of it being used at
one location while it's being used at another. Just as a book
cannot be read by two different persons at the same time.

Commercial users of MASS Retail Sales must register and pay for
their copies of MASS Retail Sales within 30 days of first use or
    their license is withdrawn.

Anyone distributing MASS Retail Sales for any kind of remuneration must
first contact Reed Consulting Services in writing for authorization.
This authorization will be automatically granted to distributors
recognized by the (ASP) as adhering to its guidelines for shareware
distributors, and such distributors may begin offering MASS Retail
Sales immediately. (However, Reed Consulting Services must still be
advised so that the distributor can be kept up-to-date with the latest
    version of MASS Retail Sales.)

You are encouraged to pass a copy of MASS Retail Sales along to your
friends for evaluation. Please encourage them to register their
copy if they find that they can use it.
