BOOT.SYS(tm) and the accompanying programs and documentation are

                 Copyright (c) 1989, 1990, 1991, 1993 Hans Salvisberg
                                 All rights reserved

BOOT.SYS lets you display one or more menus at boot-up time and
have different parts of CONFIG.SYS and/or AUTOEXEC.BAT executed
depending on which menu options you select. Its basic functional-
ity is similar to the multi-config feature in MS/PC-DOS 6.0, but
BOOT.SYS goes much further with a nice menu, if/then/else and use
of variables in CONFIG.SYS, and editing of designated CONFIG.SYS
lines on-the-fly, just to name a few.

          Shareware Distribution (<ASP>)

BOOT.SYS is distributed as shareware which means you may try it
out free of charge if you accept the license agreement in the
accompanying documentation. If BOOT.SYS serves your needs and you
keep it installed on your PC after the initial trial period then
          you must register.

You may share BOOT.SYS with your friends and associates and
upload it to public bulletin boards. Please pass it on unmodified
in the original archive as BOOTnnn.EXE where nnn is the version
number. If there are less than 7 characters available for the
file name then truncate at the end.

          Packing List

The following files make up the shareware version of BOOT.SYS,
          archived in a self-extracting self-installing archive (typically
          named BOOTnnn.ZIP):

            READ.ME this file
            DESCRIBE.DOC descriptions of various lengths
            VENDOR.DOC information about distributing BOOT.SYS
            FILE_ID.DIZ BBS on-line file description
            BOOTINST.EXE self-extracting self-installing archive contain-
ing the BOOT.SYS programs and documentation
                           (sometimes named BOOTnnn.EXE)

          How to Proceed

Create a bootable diskette and try it out; make sure you can edit
your CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files. It is very unlikely that
you will need to use the boot diskette, but you should never make
any changes to your configuration files without having a working
          bootable diskette.

Now run the BOOTINST.EXE program. It will

            - ask you for a target directory (It doesn't have to exist but
it shouldn't have any other files in it.)

            - extract the following files into the target directory:

BOOT.SYS the menu program to call from CONFIG.SYS
                  BOOT.EXE a supporting utility
                  BOOT.DOC the documentation for BOOT.SYS
PAUSE.SYS a utility to aid in debugging complex setups
                  LICENSE.DOC end user license agreement
ORDER.DOC registration information and order form
SITELICE.DOC site license information and order form
SHAREBK.AD an ad for a how-to guide to shareware
SAMPLES\ directory with a number of sample files

            - guide you through the installation

            - create sample configuration files that you can use to try
               out BOOT.SYS right away

            - create a log file with detailed explanations customized for
               your system

BOOTINST does NOT make any changes to your CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEX-
EC.BAT files. We have tried our best to make BOOTINST work with
all configuration files, but it is possible that you have an
unusual CONFIG.SYS that we did not foresee. We rely on you to
examine the log file and the sample configuration files. Make
sure they look reasonable and then copy them over your CONFIG.SYS
          and AUTOEXEC.BAT and reboot.

          ASP CD-ROM Extracted Version

For your convenience we have already extracted the additional
text files to let you view them. But we have not extracted
the executable files, because you should run the BOOTINST
installation program to get you up and running BOOT.SYS in a
          few minutes.
BOOTINST is safe to use: it will not modify your CONFIG.SYS
and AUTOEXEC.BAT files but it will create sample files in its
installation directory that you may examine and then copy to
          C:\. BOOTINST can even upgrade a DOS6 multi-config setup.
          Give it a try!

          Upgrade Information

See ORDER.DOC for information about upgrading from a previous
          version of BOOT.SYS.

          If you need help

We have worked hard to make BOOT.SYS easy to set up and maintain,
but if you need help in getting started or if you have any other
questions, you can contact us at the address below. However,
please understand that we reserve the major part of our support
efforts for our registered users (= paying customers).
