WWIV/Fidonet Setup Instructions 3-6-94
by Jeff Shannon

In the past few months I have helped a few people hook WWIV 4.23 into
Fidonet. In an effort to help more people I have decided to compile
the following help file.

In my setup I have WWIVGATE 2.00C, GECHO 1.00, and FRONT DOOR 2.02NC.
Some people may wish to use Squish as their tosser rather than Gecho.
If you choose to do this, the other information in this document should
still prove to be helpful.

I have the following drive setup. WWIV 4.23 resides in C:\WWIV,
Front Door resides in C:\FD, and Gecho resides in C:\GECHO. Most of the
people I know prefer to put Gecho in a subdirectory off C:\FD. This is
perfectly ok.

Here's a checklist that you should have before getting started.

[ ] Front Door
[ ] Gecho, Squish, or another mail tosser
[ ] WWIVgate (2.00C is the latest as of this writing.)
[ ] Fossil driver such as BNU or X00
[ ] Fidonet nodelist
[ ] Fidokit

You can download all of these items from Rivendell BBS or from The
Dark Side BBS. I have WWIVgate available on my system. WWIVgate will
be part of NET34 when it is released.

Unarchive Front Door into a directory called FD. You should also create
following subdirectories at this time and make note of them. Take a peek
at my direectory tree below if you are unsure.

You will need to enter these paths into Front Door, Gecho, and WWIVgate's
setup later.

Unzip your nodelist into the nodelist directory. Probably C:\FD\NODELIST
if you are following my setup.

Unzip Gecho into whatever directory you create for it.

Create a directory off your WWIV directory named FIDO. Follow whatever
convention you use for your other WWIV networks. Unzip WWIVGATE into
this directory. Move WWIVGATE.DAT from your newly created FIDO directory
to your WWIV directory.

Next choose the MAILER menu. Go down to ERRORLEVELS and set the errorlevels
to the following. For all the baudrates choose one errorlevel. (I use 100.)
Choose YES for "Create .BAT file." There is also a menu for function keys in
the MAILER menu. You'll probably want to go in and set errorlevels for
external functions such as loading the BBS locally, forcing mail runs, etc.

Here is my C:\FD directory and it's sub directories with a few comments.

Now you are ready to start configuring all of the utilities.

Front Door Setup

Run FDSETUP. Move to the GLOBAL menu and select ADDRESS. This is where
you will enter your Fidonet node, BBS name, etc. After you do all of that
select the section for FILENAMES. Here is my setup.

System C:\FD
Netmail C:\FD\MAIL
Files C:\FD\FILE
Packets C:\FD\PACKET
Banner C:\FD\BANNER.TXT
Nodelist C:\FD\NODELIST
Message Base C:\FD\MAIL
In-Event C:\FD\EVENT

After entering your filenames and directories enter complete the sections for
GENERAL and USERS.

Now go to MANAGER. This is a bit confusing for me because I don't know what
all of the EVENT choices mean. If you figure out the part about the event
base, let me know :-). Set up your events as you see fit. An event tag of
X will exit with an error level. Look at the Front Door documentation for
more information.

For all of the other sections in FDSETUP I generally use the defaults. You
will probably need to adjust the modem configuration though.

Gecho Setup

Run GSETUP. There is a one time password that you will have to enter here.
Refer to your docs for the password.

Chose SYSTEM DATA and fill in the appropriate information for all of the
sections. When you get to pathnames use the following.

Message Base C:\FD\MAIL
NetMail C:\FD\MAIL
Inbound Mail C:\FD\FILE
Outbound PKT's C:\FD\PACKET
BadEcho C:\FD\BADECHO
Secure C:\FD\SECURE
Nodelist C:\FD\NODELIST

Next go to GLOBAL OPTIONS and set all of those choices.

Under NODE MANAGER you need to set up your Fake Point address for WWIVgate.
This is a bit confusing for some. It was for me. I'll explain my setup
and hopefully you can pick up on it.

My Fido node is 1:112/74. For a fake point I chose .2. In the node address
section of NODE MANAGER I entered 1:112/74.2 as the node and chose 1:112/74
in the Route Via option. This is explained a bit more in the WWIVgate docs.

Now to set up your Echos. Go to ECHO MANAGER. I'll help you set up the
SYSOP112 echo for local sysops in Net 112 (Jacksonville).

You should have a big empty page. Hit Ins to add an Echo. For Area Name
enter SYSOP112. Area type should be ECHOMAIL. Format should be PASSTHRU.
Origin AKA should be your node number. (1:112/74 for me) Seen by should
be your node number and for Export list you need to add your mail hub and
your fake point for WWIVgate. (1:112/1 and 1:112/74.2 for me.) Hit ESC
and save the entry. You will need to do this for each echo you add. I
turned security off on my echos because at one time I had trouble with an
early release of WWIVgate. If you have problems you may wish to turn
security off.

An alternative to the passthru format is *.MSG. This will work with
WWIVGATE but is slower. If you chose this option you'll have to enter
the path to the *.MSG files. If you look up above at my directory tree
you'll notice a subdirectory named RECGUNS. This is an echo which I had
set up in that fashion. I prefer passthru for speed and space reasons
though.

The last thing you need to setup is PACK MANAGER. I have my hub selected
here (Pack via: 1:112/1) and have an asterisk in the other field for routed
nodes.

Check all of the other options for Gecho and make sure you have them set to
your likings. I believe I took the defaults for everything else.

WWIVgate configuration

The best thing I can do here is include the copy of my WWIVGATE.DAT. There
is a copy that comes with WWIVGATE but mine matches what I have told you
so far and should be a bit more helpful.

Network 4 200:202/167 2 167 9405 0 ; See notes for these two lines...

The above lines are for my Fido nodes. Network 1 is Fido. Network 4 is
LionNet. The "p" above the line is my fake point, "fn" is my fake node,
"wwiv" is my WWIVnet node, and "reg" is my registration number which I
have omitted :-)

For the fake point I chose 2 just as the WWIVgate docs used. For my fake
node I used my fido node number. Fido uses the following node numbering
systen. Zone:Net/Node.Point. I find it's easier to use your node as your
fake node. It's your call though.

Subboard 1674 sysop112 1

For the sub boards you "make up" a WWIVnet type numeric sub type and follow
it by the Fidonet area, followed by the network number. Refer to the
WWIVgate docs for more information regarding network numbers.

The Skip_to_user and Skip_from_user flags are useful for things like Areafix
and online games such as Barren Realms Elite (I highly recommend joining
a BRE league once entering Fidonet)

I have the alias_ok flag set so people can use their alias in LionNet. Fido
doesn't really go for aliases but other nets do. Make sure you set your Fido
subs to Real Name in BoardEdit.

In your C:\WWIV\FIDO directory you need to create an Nxxxx.NET file for each
sub, where xxxx is the WWIV type sub number you defined. Inside the file
goes your WWIVnet node number. ie

copy con n1674.net
9405
^Z

Looks pretty familiar. Now you set the sub up in BOARDEDIT as you would
with any other sub.

That's it for all of the utilities. Now we need to put them all together so
we can get your board up and running. I call Front Door from a batch file
named RUNFD.BAT. You will probably want to edit this for your own use.

This is identical to what I have in RUNFD.BAT. You really only need to have
it in one place. As you play around with Front Door's event manager you'll
learn all kinds of tricks. I can have all of my little batch files in one
large one with labels and then call each label with an error level. I at
one time did this but the batch file was so large it took too much time to
search through.

I almost left this one out. This is FDNODE.CTL it goes in your NODELIST

; COST <NATL COST> <INTL COST> [BAUD RATE]
;
; Indicates the start of the cost table. The two (default) parameters are
; NOT optional. The default cost only applies to numbers with no matching
; entry in the cost table.
;
; An additional parameter can be added after the cost for a number entry
; indicating the maximum baud rate used. This is useful when calling
; locations with a lot of line noise etc. Please note that this doesn't
; work with several high-speed modems such as the US Robotics HST. You
; can't force a HST modem to connect at 2400 with another HST modem by
; changing the baud rate.
;
; Note: You should *only* list those areacodes/exchanges that you don't
; want to give the default cost.
;

Hopefully this file will get you up and running. If you find it useful,
great! If you find any errors in it let me know so I can correct them so
others won't get lost.

If you have followed everything up to here you should be set. Make sure
C:\FD (or whatever you called your directory) is in your path and your
fossil is loaded. Change to your FD directory and run FDNL. This will
compile your nodelist. When you are done type RUNFD and you're set.
Now do Alt-E, Ins, and enter 1:112/74 on the To: line and send me some mail.
I can also be reached on WWIVnet 1@9405.

Good luck.
