What method was used to generate that patch?
(I don't mean the uuencoding, I mean the CNet patch itself.)

Any plans on getting together with Graham Scott and releasing a patch
to fix CNetToss too?

He has both a C and AREXX version. But neither patches CNetToss itself.
(They work on the fidonet packets instead.)

BB> What method was used to generate that patch?

I need to know *HOW* you wrote that executable. You surely didn't just
pick a handful of random locations within CNet:BBS and change their
values to random ASM op-codes that worked. How? An executable
debugger? Which one? A memory debugger? Which? Disassembled/
reassembled CNet:BBS? How? With what? Ken's help? Can I see the
text? Can I see your source code? Psychic help? Which 1-900 number
do I call? Anything?

BB> Any plans on getting together with Graham Scott and releasing a patch

BM> No. I don't run FIDO and don't plan to

Maybe I could tackle this one. (But not without info on how you did
yours.) If you are reluctant to say (don't know why), perhaps others
could throw their ideas in. How was this patch done? How would a
CNetToss patch be done?

BM> and am unaware of what needs to be patched anyway.

Here's what others (Todd H Knight, in this case) are stating needs to
be done...

*THAT'S* what I need to know. *HOW* did you do it?

Would the "CTRL-A CNetToss fix" be considered "adding" or "fixing"?
(No point in me trying something that ranges somewhere between "over my
head" and "impossible".)

No offense, but I'm afraid a non-OS2, low-memory, non-accelerator,
small-HD (or no-HD) A1000 is very limiting. And the big bucks you'd
spend trying to update it could almost get you a used A3000.

A1000's would be great for use as additional null-modem-port machines.
(Two family members could both access your BBS at the same time from
different parts of the house without tying up any phone lines.)

List a handful, maybe someone will suggest how/where they can be
obtained. (Or maybe it'll even spawn some new ideas and someone will
throw something together for release.)

File-requ "KEN" from 1:2410/207 for more than 2 *THOUSAND* CNet tips,
ideas, suggestions, thoughts, comments, fixes, changes, help,
modifications, etc. The largest single resource (by one author, me)
that I know of.

File-requ "CNetMods" from 1:2410/207 for a list of 10-15 *VERY* easy
things you can do to modify/customize CNet to your liking.

Sure wish more SysOps and users would throw all their ideas into a file
for easy file-requ'ing.

I don't think you'll have to worry about "missing the big news". I'm
sure it'll be quickly spread all over these Fidonet echos, Ken's BBS,
my BBS, pertinent Internet newsgroups, etc.

I'll post (as I'm sure others will) as soon as possible (and I'm
allowed) after I receive a beta-test copy of CNet v4.0 (and the finally
non-beta, too).

BB> Not yet. Ken's still working on the next release. (It'll be called
BB> v4.0, not v3.5, but it *IS* coming.)

K> Great 4.0 that menas we will all have to pay for it!!!

That's always been the policy...
All 2.xx updates are free to 2.xx owners.
All 3.xx updates are free to 3.xx owners.
All 4.xx updates are free to 4.xx owners.
(Should be mentioned in your CNet manual.)

K> Darn. Only got to update my 3.05 1 time! Now it will be back to the bucks

There's no policy on the exact *NUMBER* of free updates you'll get.
Might be 1. Might be 45. (The 3.xx series only had a few updates.
But there were more than *50* changes/fixes/improvements just in the
v3.05a to v3.05c updates alone.)

I'm much more concerned with what is *IN* the updates, than I am with
the *number* of them.

v4.0 is going to be a *VERY EXTENSIVE* update.

It's pretty easy to get nearly any archiver to work with CNet. The
config difficulty arises when so many different sysops are using so
many different archivers, and different versions of those archivers.

Post the last few lines of a successful VIEW of an archive.
Post the last few lines of an unsuccessful one.
I'm sure someone will tell you what you need to know.

(It's simply and matter of counting lines and characters.)

Once you know the method, you can do-it-yourself anytime you need.

I've never owned a CD, so I'm afraid I can't be of much help.

I hope you've also forwarded a copy of your msg to Fred Fish. Also
adding s-p-e-c-i-f-i-c-a-l-l-y what you would like his next CD to look
like.

TT> Oh, and how about those discription files?... "Product Info" is neat but
TT> is there an easy way to have CNet think of the ".pi" files as it does with

I've never used any of the ".diz" processors. Tell the author of one
that it needs to be config'able. Using .pi or .diz files or any other
filename also. (I assumed they already did.)

TT> online for BBS's)... He has a million and one directories and in order
TT> to add the files online you have to pretty much build a directory for each
TT> of his directories...

Do you want an automatic way to create all those dirs within CNet?
Do you want to manually create dirs (and dir names of your choosing) and
have CNet find the files in different dirs? (as they appear on the CD?)
That 1 would be tricky. Ken *should* (but didn't) allow files online to
point to either of 2 things:
1) The partition + the dir + the filename as config'ed in that subboard.
2) A full path that is specified. (Totally disregarding #1.)

TT> here... Think you could help us out?.. Im sure that more than one CNet
TT> Sysop has had the nightmare of adding a FrozenFish CD-Rom... Thanks for

I've afraid I can't be of much help without a CD (nor your answers to
the above questions.)

Please reply to this msg in 1 of the public CNet echos. 100 heads are
better than 1. Always.

Type c:Avail at a DOS prompt. Are you low on memory? That can
sometimes cause things to appear locked.

Do the subboard(s) in question have the flag set for keep-headers, or
keep-items, or keep-nothing in memory?
