               =============================================
                            SCION GENEALOGIST
               =============================================

                   [Formerly known as ArJay Genealogist]

This is a specialised database for keeping track of genealogical
information. It features a full, easy to use, Intuition interface
with key short-cuts for most gadgets.

The programme is totally non-sexist and secular in nature, and
correctly handles multiple marriages, "unconventional" marriages,
        adopted children, and unmarried parents.

The printed reports include descendant and pedigree charts,
personal details reports, family group sheets, and index lists of
        people and families.

Free-form note files can be created using any editor, and IFF
pictures can be viewed using any IFF viewer, from within the
        programme.

Other features include dynamic on-screen ancestor and descendant
charts, extensive on-line context-sensitive help (using
"AmigaGuide", Commodore Business Machines), flexible "regular
expression" searching, and multiple ARexx ports with extensive
        command set.

Up to 1000 people per database, with databases held in RAM for
maximum speed and responsiveness. Can be used with PAL or NTSC.
AmigaDOS 2.04 (or later) required. 1 Meg RAM recommended.

Version 3.06, binary only. Update to v3.04 of ArJay Genealogist.

Many new options (including basic LDS compatibility) - see below.
Some bug fixes - now works correctly with European keyboards.

NOTE: This programme will read databases created with ArJay Genealogist,
but when that database is then saved, it will no longer be able to
be read by the old ArJay Genealogist (only by Scion Genealogist).

If you still wish to work with the old ArJay Genealogist, make a
copy of any existing database created with ArJay Genealogist, and
use that copy with the supplied Scion Genealogist.

Retain the original for use with ArJay Genealogist.

charge may be made for copying). If you would would like to make a

Sorry, I don't have email yet!

Thanks to my beta testers for assistance and suggestions - especially
Chris Woodhouse and Dave Hicks. Thanks also to Jan van den Baard for
"GadToolsBox" Copyright 1991,92 Jaba Development - it certainly made
programming the user interface a lot less painful!

Thanks also to Freddy Aries in Harreveld, The Netherlands, and to Peter
Billing in Yinnar, Australia for valuable suggestions (and, I hate to
admit, a couple of bug reports!).

(b) Even though the supplied sample database "Example" is based on a real
family, the names and events used are purely fictitious, and any
resemblance to actual events or persons (living or dead) is entirely
    coincidental.

(c) Scion Genealogist uses "amigaguide.library" to provide the on-line,
    context-sensitive help.

"amigaguide.library" is installed using the supplied "InstallHelp"
script - accessible from the WorkBench by clicking on the "InstallHelp"
icon. The installation script will install "amigaguide.library" in the
LIBS: directory, and the stand-alone help viewer "Amigaguide" in the
SYS:Utilities directory. The script will NOT copy these files if it
detects a more recent version of these files already installed.

Once the Amigaguide help systems is installed, on-line help is
available from within Scion Genealogist by pressing the "HELP" key.

If the mouse pointer is positioned over a gadget when the "HELP" key
is pressed, help on that particular gadget will be displayed.

If a menu item is being selected when the "HELP" key is pressed, help
on that particular menu item will be displayed.

If the mouse is NOT positioned over a gadget when the "HELP" key is
pressed, the main help contents screen for the programme will be
    displayed.

NOTE: For the on-line help system to locate the Scion Genealogist help
file, the file "Scion.guide" MUST be located either in the same
directory as the Scion programme, or in the S: logical directory,
or in the location specified by the Amigaguide/Path environment
variable (see Help On Help from within the help system).

(d) Changes make since ArJay Genealogist Version 3.04:

--- Programme renamed to Scion Genealogist.

    --- Some bug fixes:
            (1) Programme did not support shortcut keys correctly
with European mapped keyboards. This has now been
corrected, and shortcut keys are "simple" keyboard
characters (rather than ALT characters) to conform
                with interface guide-lines.
            (2) There was a very subtle bug that got past ALL my
debugging tools (including enforcer - which SHOULD
have found it!). This bug caused the programme to
think that a child (being added to a family group)
was (erroneously) a parent of one of its own parents.
                HOPEFULLY this has been fixed.
            (3) Circumvented a bug in "amigaguide.library" (it didn't
release a lock on the help file). The disk icon will
now go away when the disk is ejected.
            (4) Some very minor bugs that nobody reported or probably
                even noticed!

    --- New features:
            (1) "Pick list" of last names added to reduce typing and
to help ensure name spelling is consistent.
            (2) Database loading is now about 2 times faster.
            (3) Can now type in IRN (or FGRN) to go directly to a
particular record (using the ^ gadget in the Personal
Details Window, or the ^ gadget in the Family
                Details Window).
            (4) "Add Spouse" gadget changed to "Set Spouse". This gadget
now permits removal of an existing spouse (without
dissolving the whole family group), the changing of an
existing spouse to another, or adding a new spouse (as
                before).
            (5) An additional data field has been added to the Personal
                Details Window.
            (6) The last three data fields in the Personal Details
Window and the last two fields in the Family Details
Window now have user configurable labels. (Possible
                LDS compatibility)
            (7) The original "Spouse/Children" gadget is now purely a
"navigation" gadget and will take you to the Family
Details Window for the current person's spouse and
children. To establish the FIRST marraige (family
group) for the current person, use the new
                "Set 1st Marriage" gadget.

Similarly in the Family Details Window, the "" (next
marriage) gadget is also now purely a "navigation" gadget.
To establish further marriages for the current principal,
use the new "New Marriage" gadget.
            (8) Some changes to the menus layout.
            (9) "Find Previous" gadget added to search requester. Search
requester can now be conveniently used as a "browser".
           (10) Option to print IRN's of each person on a descendant
                chart.
           (11) New "Go to Family" and "Go to Person" gadgets to go
directly to the appropriate details window when the FGRN
                or IRN is known.
           (12) New "Fath" (Go to Father) and "Moth" (Go to Mother)
gadgets to go directly to the Personal Details Window for
the currently displayed person's father or mother.
           (13) New "Set Behaviour" menu item that allows the user to set:
                - Whether confirmation is required on "Add New Person"
                - Whether first names should be capitalized
                - Whether event place names (such as Birth Place) should
                  be capitalized
                - Whether the current Last Name should automatically be
carried over into the Last Name field of a new person.
           (14) New "Save" menu item (in addition to "Save As..." option).
           (15) Children of a family group are now sorted by birth date.
