Queen Mary and Westfield College Amiga Society was founded in January 1996 by Chris Livermore. Although many people expressed interest in the society, only a few people were dedicated enough to give their long term support and join the society. This was partly due to the fact that the society did not have access to an Amiga on site.

In March an old unused A2000 was discovered in one of the Electronic Engineering Department Laboratories. This was quickly pressed into use, however it was of limited appeal, being WB1.3 machine with 1MB of memory and no hard drive.

In the summer of 1996 the Deputy Head of Electronic Engineering, donated this A2000 to the society on an indefinate long loan, and so the society aquired its first Amiga computer.

Major Breakthrough On Wednesday 21st August 1996, after a bit of research and inside information from Julian - our man at Dixons (and the society treasurer), Chris, Andy and Julian embarked on an expidition to South London in search of a cheap Amiga A1200. Having set ourselves a tight budget of 70 pounds for a machine, and set to haggle down to £50, we were speechless when the manager of that branch conceeded to selling us two A1200s for 40 pounds, ie £20 each. After some testing, they proved to be in fine working order except for a slight fault on the audio side on one of the machines (sound is too loud and distorted).

September 18, 19,20 saw Andy, Julian and Chris at the Freshers fair, showing off two A1200s with serial linked Lotus Turbo Challenge 2, 5 player Dynoblaster, serial linked Stunt Car Racer, and a few Demos off the net. We got around 40 people interested enough to join the society. Andy and Julian are currently in the process of trying to contact them all (the first years didn't have e-mail accounts at that point).

On the 20 September, Chris took all 3 machines home with him for temporary storage while Julian and Andy negotiate with computing services with regards to installing the machines within the Computing Services demonstration area and the IT centre. While the machines are at his house, Chris will install a hard disk controller and hard drive into the A2000.

October 1996 Mark joined the AmigaSoc and started tinkering around with the web pages! :-)

11th March 1997: AmigaSoc is presently discussing the issues related to becoming the offical Computing Society of Queen Mary and Westfield College with members of the Department of Computer Science, with a view to strengthening our links with the British Computer Society and the Institute of Electrical Engineers. We aim to provide a medium for communication between members of the computing and engineering industries and the University. We will endeavour to arrange a forum scenario where members of professional organisations will be able to talk about their fields, thus providing a crucial information source and ultimately giving students a greater understanding of the industry and it's requirements.
