Issue 13 Poll:Netscape for AmigaOS? | ||||||
Notes about the poll:It's a terrible thing, having to count up all these votes. My mailbox is overrun with your electronic voting papers. So, as I may already have mentioned, I'm going to try and write an Arexx CGI to count them up. Anyone who wants to give me a hand, please do so |
"Should a future AmigaOS have Netscape integrated?"
As you may or may not know, Petro Tyschtschenko let it slip at the recent Saku Amiga show in Finland, that AI are in talks with Netscape about a possible inclusion of their browser in a future AmigaOS, possibly OS 4. Is this a good idea though? Netscape is currently still the world's most widely used browser. It's feature packed, supports almost everything, including Java applets etc. Having it included/integrated with Workbench would be many an Amiga web surfers' dream come true. It would also considerably strengthen the Amiga's case for being the ultimate Internet computer. Seeing Netscape developed for the Amiga could also tempt a lot of computer buyers looking for Internet access to plump for an Amiga. Then again, Netscape is a bulky PC product. It's not exactly the nippiest, and would require a considerably specced-up Amiga, so it can't exactly be bundled with an A1200 Magic Pack. Users already on the Net are already using perfectly good browsers, which although slightly lacking in features, are fast, run on a lot less specs, and are written in 100% Amiga code by dedicated Amiga shareware authors. Having an Amiga Netscape would be a slap in the face of those authors who have been vital to the Amiga Net community in the past. It's up to you: should a future AmigaOS have Netscape integrated?
