Foreword:

In his majesty's absence

As you may have noticed by the title, I'm writing this in Chris's absence since he's busy swotting up for some important exams coming up, or at least he should be ;).

However the show must go on, so he's kindly asked me to fill in for him for as long as his exams last. So I got out the coffee, did some finger stretching exercises, and started typing away in a mad frenzy, the result of which you're now reading.

Quite different, isn't it? I've changed the lay-out of the mag a fair bit, because I think this new lay-out using frames will make the mag a whole lot easier to read for you folks out there. It's quite probable Chris will take a big swipe at it and KO it in the first round, so next month will probably see a return to the format of old, but I reckon it is at least worth a try!

Talking on the issue of mag lay-out, I've come up with a reader survey this month, to find out what you guys want exactly, since we've had a few moans here and there about our use of PNG, and other things. It's also your chance to let us know how you rate the mag's content, and what kind of things you'd like to see in future issues.

We definitely know what all you Netscape users out there would like to see: the magazine, for once. As other users may or may not know, we've had major problems getting The Lair to show up in Netscape, mainly because Netscape's a big bully, and The Lair is very shy. I've made a special effort this month to get things working in Netscape again, so I hope the problems our Netscape readers were having are finally dead and buried now.

Chris and I as I hope you are all well aware, are constantly trying to improve The Lair, making it more fun for all you guys to read. Thus we decided a few months ago that a message board would be a lot of fun, and a good forum for discussion with our readers. Bluey kindly offered to set it up for us on his company's (The Digital Word Company) server, and so we introduced this great new service for our readers, a fun place to discuss anything related to The Lair or the Amiga- which it seems went almost unnoticed. So come on guys! There must be heaps of stuff to chat about, not only regarding this issue but regarding the goings on in the Amiga community. I hope to see lots of postings soon!

Anyway, leaving the ranting on the sidelines again, I reckon we've got another great issue for you again this month, with our beginner's guide to keys and crypto, part two of the Javascript tutorial, a lengthy interview with the World Foundry, an article on a great chance to stay online longer for less, and of course the Aminet dig, aswell as a poll on whether Netscape should be a part of OS4 or not, not forgetting the reader survey which I hope you'll all fill out. Phew! I'm almost out of breath.

Enjoy this issue,

Erik.
