INTERVIEW WITH TONY VALENTINE AND FLUID TONY VALENTINE Q) What were your earliest influences and are they still current? Bob Marley and all kinds of black music. Q) Dance music has replaced rock music of the generation where do you see it going? The audience seems to be getting younger and younger and all good to it. Q) What role do you see radio playing in dance music? Radio is very important as it gets music out to the people who don't go to clubs and that's a lot bigger audience than those who do go to clubs. Q) What do you prefer radio or playing out? Definitely playing out. I prefer the reaction from a live audience it's more full on. Q) Where are your favourite places to play? I prefer playing in clubs rather than house parties. I've got no favourite clubs. Just anywhere that will have me. Q) What's your favourite bit about radio? The comradeship. When we get a good repartee in the studio its really good. Q) What's your dream gig? Any gig that goes really well when I don't get things chucked at me. Q) As we approach the information age how do you see the role of radio changing? I hope it gets better and better, and reaches out to wider audiences. FLUID Q) What were your earliest influences and are they still current? You may remember a group called Dave Ansell Collins. Dave used to be our lodger and loads of musical people used to come round and practice and we used to go out on the road with them. Q) Dance music has replaced rock as the music of the 90s, what next? Pop will get the same credibility as rock. It will move on and become the music for this generation so probably the next generation will have something else. Q) What role do you see radio playing in dance music? A very important role. The way to get music out to the masses. People may not go clubbing, and that's the only place they can hear it. Q) What do you prefer radio or playing out? Playing out as you get to see the way music moves the people. You get to interact more, although I do love the radio. Q) What are your favourite places to play in? Good question.
