Requirements: 512k memory Kickstart and Workbench v1.2 or higher Narrator.device in Devs: directory Hard Disk The student directory manager was designed to allow easy creation and deletion of directories and the files contained therein, and the ability to associate that directory with a student, and each student with a period (or multiple periods), and grade. It is designed to use a directory structure similar to the following: StudentData: (User selected hard disk partition or assign) 9 (Dir) Frank (Dir) Frank's Files Here Ted (Dir) Ted's Files Here 10 (Dir) Fred (Dir) Fred's Files Here etc. To Install the Directory Manager on your computer, double click the InstallDirManager icon. This program will ask you what volume, directory or assign the directories for each selected grade level should be created under, where to install the DirManager program, what the initial password for the DirManager program should be, and what grade level directories (7,8,9,etc.) to create. When you have set all the options satisfactorily, click OK. To back out of the installation Click Cancel. If there are any errors, the install program will tell you. The most common problem will be that the Install From directory is not set correctly, and the program cannot find the source files on the specified disk. To fix this, run the install program again, and make sure that you specify the correct directory. To begin adding student directories double click the DirManager icon. A window will appear and a voice will prompt you to enter the password you selected at the time of installation. Once you enter the password, the directory manager program will begin. In the middle of the requester is an array of numbered gadgets, with the one labeled "1" selected. These gadgets let you select what period's students you will be viewing, adding to, copying, moving, deleting, or moving files to. Below the numbered gadgets is a gadget labeled all. This allows you to view all students in all periods. To add a student, select the Add text gadget and type the grade of the student, followed immediately (no space) by a slash, and then the student's name. When you hit return, Directory Manager will create a directory for that student, and give it an icon, as well as enter his grade and name into the list box on the left that shows the students in that period. Add as many students as you like to each period (students are added to whatever period is currently selected from the period gadgets). If you have a single student who will be using the computer multiple periods, you can select his name from the student list box, and click the Copy gadget. A voice will ask you to select the period to copy him to. Select the proper period from the period gadgets. Doing this operation will not create another directory for this student. It will merely change the database entry concerning him to reflect that his name should be displayed in both periods. A student can be associated with any number of periods. Another way to accomplish this is to make the second period which you wish a student to be entered for the current period (by selecting its gadget), and typing that student's name and grade into the Add gadget. A requester will appear asking you if this is the same student from the first period for which you entered him. If you answer yes, his name will be entered into the list box for the new period. If you answer no, a requester will appear telling you that each student in each grade must have a unique name, at least on the computer. To accomplish this, you can use the last name, or first name, or middle name, or initials, or combinations thereof. If a student transfers from one period to another, select his name in the first period, then click move, then select the period which he has transferred to. Again, no changes will be made to his directory, or the files in it, his database entry will just be changed to reflect his new schedule. Note that if you need to Move, Copy, or Delete multiple students from a period, you can select more than one student from the list box. To Delete student(s), select his(their) names from the list box, and then click delete. Delete will only remove them from that period. If they are in other periods, their files will remain unaffected. If however, you delete them from the only period during which they use the computer, a requester will appear informing you that they are no longer in any periods and asking you if you wish to delete their directory and all the files in it. If you select yes, their directory and its files will be deleted. To view all the students in all the periods select All from the period selection gadgets. The list box now contains the names of all the students in this period. Note that when All is selected, you cannot move students, as moving them inherently implies removing them from the All list (something that is not allowed). If you select Move, you will get an error. You can however Copy students from the All list to any period you want. If they are already in the selected period, no change is made. You can also Delete students from the All list. Note that deleting students when All is selected deletes them from all their periods, and then asks you if you want to Delete their files. This is useful if a student changes schools and you quickly want to totally remove him from the computer, but can be dangerous otherwise. DirManager also provides limited file management capabilities. It can perform two operations: delete files, and move files to a student's directory. To delete files, select them from the file requester on the right of the DirManager window. Note that this is a multi-select file requester. You can select as many files and directories as you like. To select a directory, single click on it. To enter and display a directory, double click on it. Once you have selected all the files that you want to delete, click on the delete gadget. To move files into a students directory, select the student whose directory the files are to be moved into from the student list box on the left. Note that you can only select one student for this operation. Selecting more will give you an error. After selecting the student, select all the files to move into his directory from the file requester on the right. Then click Move Files. All the selected files will be moved into the chosen student's directory. If you wish to change the password to use the DirManager program, select the Change Password gadget. A voice will prompt you to enter the password. Just type it. It will not appear on the screen anywhere. After you have finished typing it press return. A voice will then prompt you to re-enter your password. This is to insure that you did not mis-type it the first time. If the passwords match, the password will be changed. To Quit the DirManager program, close the window, or click on the Quit gadget. Note that you MUST ALWAYS QUIT the DirManager program; NEVER TURN OFF THE MACHINE when the program is running. This is very important, as the DirManager program must save its updated database file listing all the students and their periods before closing. If you turn the machine off when the program is running, it will not get a chance to do this. The database file is saved to your devs: directory under the name student.list. DO NOT DELETE OR MODIFY THIS FILE. Key board commands for DirManager are as follows 1-9, select corresponding period 0, select period 10 Ctrl-a, select View All m, Move students c, Copy students a, Activate Add string gadget d, Delete students
