Merry Christmas Amiga Flame readers and as 1997 comes to the close and a new year is about to begin, I have decided to reflect back on 1997 and look forward to what the future could hold.
1997 started slowly with News being scarce but soon News came that brought much excitement to most Gamers; News on Phoenix, Foundation, Flyin' High, Forgotten Forever, In The Shadow Of Time, Gilbert Goodmate, The Final Odsessey - the list continues. They brought hope to us all and more than ever Amiga Flame has proven to you that the Amiga Games Market is Alive - these Games Developers were doing it with determination and their determination is an example that will be led by other new developers in 1998.
March became a month that will be long remembered in the Amiga's history, for at last the Amiga Buyout would be decided and out of no where without notice Gateway 2000 bought the Amiga. The future for many at that time was uncertain but recently after the set up of Amiga International (Sales and Marketing) and Amiga Inc (Research and Development) we have discovered that a new Amiga is on it's way - "a Computer, Game Machine, TV, Settop-Box, TVD and Internet access device all in one device".
The repercussions since the buyout have been enormous, moral has been high both among users and companies. News following this annoucement doubled such as on Wasted Dreams, OnEscapee, Operation Blindstorm The Total Chaos, Fortress Of Fear, ClickBOOM converting Myst and hopefully Quake soon, Genetic Species, GOLEM, Shadow of the Third Moon, BrainKiller etc. Amiga Games Developers have become highly skilled they spend so much time and effort on their games and they make them to highest quality. If you see an e-mail address at the bottom of a News article on a game, always try and e-mail them with your support and ideas for they give so much of their time to you.
It also heralded risks especially for Vulcan Software who announced their plans that they were to go CD-Rom only. It was described as the rebirth of the Amiga Games Market and for Vulcan Software it was a risk which has now paid off and has created a cascade effect with now nearly every Amiga Publisher following in their path and Amiga Owners have had with confidence to Upgrade, to move the Games Market foreward, to help create a whole new generation of Amiga games. We must continue to UPGRADE and with it will come even more stunning games.
It was in the middle and near the end of the year that seen the entrance of new Amiga Publishers - Auraro Works, Titan Computer, Alive MediaSoft, Sadeness Software. They are companies which we must give our support and they are sure to have a bright future with many of them expanding further with plenty of games planned for release in 1998 from them. Although Game Releases have been light this year all projections indicate that there will be a increase in the new year.
Petro Tyschtschenko said in a speech in Cologne that the Amiga is indestructible and he is right for the Amiga Community will not go down and will not give up, it's now only a matter of time before the Amiga is back. Perhaps in the past it has seem more like a dream but now the evidence and the current developments suggest that our dreams will come true. I hope that next Christmas will see Amiga Flame covering the arrival of the new Amiga, for I believe 1998 will be the most eventful year for the Amiga.
