Users : Please feel free to copy this program and give it to your friends etc. 2.1 Introduction ---------------- ASCII View, as you may have guessed, is a program for viewing the ASCII codes of key's you press. However, new in version 2.0, you can now also view the keys of ASCII codes that you enter. If you do not know, ascii key codes are the codes used by programs to detect which key has been pressed. They are standard accross all programming languages and operating systems. This program is written with programmers in mind, however it is easy for anyone to use. 2.2 System Requirements ----------------------- This program requires versions 2.0 or better of the operating system. It works on floppy disk or hard disk. To run simply double click on the (ugly) icon and the program should run. The program requires about 55K of memory (can be any type, though some chip RAM is needed for the window). The program opens the following files (which are usually stored in ROM):- mathffp.library intuition.library graphics.library console.device GadTools.library If you wish to use the supplied installation script then you will need Installer®. Any version will work under Workbench 2 or better. 2.3 Installation ---------------- Please use the installation script provided. It requires the installer program from Commodore or Amiga Technologies / Escom. If you get the message Unable to open your tool 'Installer' then you will need to find the installer package. You will probably already have this on your system. Check on your original Operating System disks as well as any application software disks you have. It is usually stored in the C or Utilities directory of your disks. These may not have icons, so remember to Use Show... All Files from the Window menu on your Workbench (Workbench 2.0+ Only). Copy this to your C directory or simply change the default tool of the install icon to point to the location of Installer. See your Workbench manual for information on Default Tools. You should select a mode appropriate to your Amiga knowledge. Novice user is mostly automatic and will create an install log file. Under all options however you must select what type of help you wish to install, if any. The options are both this text file and the guide file, the guide file, the text file or none. This is selected by clicking on the gadget and pressing proceed. Don't forget that the installer has full on-line help throughout. Amateur allows you to select operations regarding log files and installing for real or pretending to install. After that installation is the same as novice. If you select expert you must confirm at every stage of the installation procedure. You MUST however select to install the main executable Ascii View or the program will not work. If the installation procedure should fail at any time check that you have inserted the right disk, that the disk is not damaged in any way and that there is enough room free on the disk (Ascii View requires approximatly 23K of disk space). If problems persist then you will have to do it manually. The instructions for doing this are below :- Manual Installation Instruction 1. Copy the Ascii View program to the desired destination 2. Optionally copy this guide and / or the document file to this directory, or where ever you want it to go. Thats it. You can of course run the program from this disk. 3.1 Useage ---------- This program is very simple to use and works in two modes. The first mode, which is the mode the program starts in, is for viewing ASCII codes of key's you press. When the program is run a window will open in the top left hand corner of your Workbench screen, with three text gadgets and a button. The top text box shows you what key you pressed (or blank if you have not yet pressed a key), and the next one the ASCII code of that key. The bottom text box shows which mode the program is currently in. Clicking change mode will swap modes. The second mode allows you to enter an ASCII code and the program will show you the corresponding ASCII code. The top gadget shows the computers representation of the ASCII code, the next allows you to enter an ASCII code (press return after you enter it). The bottom box again shows the mode the program is in. Click the change mode button to change back to the view mode. If when in Key Find mode, you enter an ASCII code and a small box charachter appears in the top box, it means the computer cannot represent the charachter on screen. The most common reason for this is that the code you have entered is for a special key such as backsapce or return. This will also happen in view mode, if you press one of these keys. To quit the program, click the close gadget on the top left of the window. 4.1 Bugs -------- Whilst every attempt has been made to ensure this software is bug free, there may well still be some bugs in the code. If you find anything happening which you do not think is supposed to then I would like to know about it, so I can fix it! Please make sure that if you are reporting bugs, that you have the program installed correctly and that you have read all the supplied documentation. If the error still occurs then please fill in the form below. Thank you. NOTE : This program may cause incorrect results when used in conjunction with the FKey program. If you set one or more of the "F" key's to insert text, ASCII view will display the ASCII code for the last charachter of this text when you press that function key. This is caused by the FKey program, which sends the text directly to the Operating System, which acts as if each of the keys have been pressed in turn, even though this is not the case. This therefore cannot be solved, so you should disable Fkey before running ASCII View. Thank you to Frank Bunton for pointing this out. This program has been tested under Workbench 3.0, although it should work on version 2 or better as well. -------------------------------Cut Here------------------------------------- Machine :- [ ] Amiga 500 [ ] Amiga 500+ [ ] Amiga 600 [ ] Amiga 1000 [ ] Amiga 1200 [ ] Amiga 1500 [ ] Amiga A2000 [ ] Amiga B2000 [ ] Amiga 3000 [ ] Amiga 4000/030 [ ] Amiga 4000/040 [ ] CDTV [ ] CD32 / SX1 [ ] CD32 Pro Module [ ] SX32 [ ] Amiga 1200 (Manufactured by Escom.) If you would like to see a version compatible with this version of the operating system then let me know and I will try to write one. 5.1 Contact Address ------------------- Please only write if reporting bugs or suggesting improvements. I will accept E-Mail only at present. E-Mail : JonCombe@Yahoo.com NOTE: I have Internet access at University, so if you send me a message during the vacations or when I have left (July 2000) then you may have to wait a while for a reply! NOTE: My old E-Mail address, is still valid, but will not be once I have left university, so please use this one, as it can be accessed from a web browser, and so I will still be able to access it. I will try to reply to all messages. ASCII view now has a web page. Visit it at :- http://www.fortunecity.com/skyscraper/sun/205/ascview.html 5.2 Other products from the author ---------------------------------- StartupDate (Amiga only) : A program to allow you to set the correct date and time when you switch on your machine. Freeware. Available from Aminet. ASCII View (Amiga) : A program to display ASCII codes of keys you press. Freeware. Available from Aminet. ASCII View (DOS) : As above for the PC. Freeware. ASCII View (Windows) : As above but for Windows 95 and 3.1. Freeware. NOTE : At the moment the Amiga version of ASCII view is the only version which allows you to see the keys of ASCII codes you enter. This may soon change! This program will soon be available for UNIX. It will be released as public domain with full source code, which will require compilation using a C++ compiler such as GNU's G++ compiler, which is free. 6.1 History ----------- Version 1.0 First release. Only had view option. Version 2.0 Second release, which implemented the two modes, to allow you to see the keys for the ASCII codes you enter. This function was suggested by Frank Bunton. Thank you! 6.2 Future ---------- The future of Ascii View depends on you. If users request new features or report bugs then I will try to change the program accordingly.
