------------------------------------------------------------------------ DEALING WITH THE CORD ------------------------------------------------------------------------ In most cases, no harm will result if the umbilical cord is left attached to the baby until mother and baby reach hospital. If the cord is very short, or removal to the hospital will be delayed, it may be necessary to cut the cord. Wait until: after the afterbirth has been expelled; the cord has stopped pulsating; or until at least 10 minutes after the birth. 1: Using 2 of the sterile ligatures, or prepared pieces of string, tie the cord TIGHTLY in two places: 15 cm (6in) and 20 cm (8in) from the baby's abdomen. If the ligature nearest the baby is not tied very tightly, the baby could bleed to death when the cord is cut. 2: Cut the cord between the two ties, using sterile scissors. 3: Place a strile dressing over the cut end at the baby's abdomen. 4: Ten minutes after cutting, inspect the cord to make sure that there is no bleeding. Tie the third remaining ligature or string around the cord about 10 cm (4in) from the baby's abdomen. 5: Dress the cord again with another sterile dressing and secure it by tying a folded napkin around the baby. IF... there is no STERILE dressing available, do not tie anything aroung the baby. ------------------------------------------------------------------------
