---------------------------------------------------------------------- CIRCULATION - FAINTING ---------------------------------------------------------------------- A faint is a brief loss of consciousness - generally of no more than a few minutes duration, caused by a temporary reduction in the flow of blood to the brain. Recovery is usually rapid and complete. It may be a nervous reaction to pain or fright; or the result of an emotional upset, exhaustion, or lack of food. It is, however, more common after long periods of physical inactivity where lack of muscular activity causes a large volume of blood to collect in the lower part of the body and legs, thus reducing the amount of blood available for the rest of the circulation. Symptoms and Signs ------------------- These are the same as for the early signs of Shock but: Pulse will be SLOW and weak. This is an important clue. The casualty may look very pale. Treatment --------- 1: If the casualty feels unsteady, sit the casualty down and help to lean forward with the head between the knees, and advise to take deep breaths. 2: Loosen any tight clothing at the neck, chest and waist, to assist in circulation and breathing. 3: Make sure that the casualty has plenty of fresh air; place casualty in a current of fresh air or fan air onto the face. If necessary place the casualty in the shade. 4: Check for and treat any injury that the casualty has sustained on falling. 5: Check breathing rate, pulse and levels of responsiveness at 10-minute intervals. 6: Reassure casualty whilst regaining consciousness; gradually raise to a sitting position. IF.. in any serious doubt about the casualty's condition, seek medical aid. ----------------------------------------------------------------------
