--------------------------------------------------------------------- SMOKE INHALATION --------------------------------------------------------------------- A fire uses up oxygen in the atmosphere so the oxygen level in a burning room is low and asphyxia may result. More-over, smoke may irritate the throat which can go into spasm and close the airway. In addition, the plastic coverings and foam padding of modern upholstery often gives off toxic fumes when burning which can be fatal. 1: Remove the casualty to safety. 2: Extinguish any clothing that is on fire or smouldering. 3: If the casualty is unconscious but breathing normally, place in the Recovery Position. ( See Resusitation ) 4: If breathing is difficult or has stopped, begin Mouth To Mouth immediately. ( See Resusitation ) 5: Remove to Hospital. Please Note: ------------ It is extremely important that you do not put your own life in danger. Never enter a smoke filled environment unless you are certain that there are NO toxic fumes. Remember the all important motto: GET OUT! CALL THE FIRE BRIGADE OUT! AND STAY OUT! ---------------------------------------------------------------------
