I first started this picture in about March 1996 and sent it into various Amiga magazines with some Worms levels I had designed. Since then I have changed it radically to the picture you see now. When I went about designing the Workbench 4 picture I looked at pictures other people had designed, Most were copies of MicroSoft Windows(c) or MacOS(c) I wanted a look that was still Amiga Workbench but without the restrictions that the current versions have. Such as having to have boarders around the icons, GUI not fast enough to play animations, CDXL,AVI etc. in a window, Restrictions on the number of colours for icons,no network support, no CD audio/MPEG players, Menu for launching commonly used programs. WWW browser and TCP, FTP, Email software. I believe that the future versions of Workbench should have all the above as standard. Also it should have emulation for PC, Mac, Bbox, Unix, and even Oracles Network Computer To make it viable to the business user who may wish to use software unavailable for Workbench. And be coupled with a Fast RISC chip, PPC 603, 604 etc. And a fast graphics card like the Cybervision 64, Piccasso 4 etc (and support for PCI graphics cards through drivers) with a good multisync monitor like the microvitec range as standard. Have true datatype support (loading and saving) in all programs that would benifit from it and come supplied with some decient datatypes and not have to rely on 3rd party and PD programmers to develop them. Updated printer support via new drivers and a new print manager like the ones on the PC. where you can have multiple print jobs which can be cancelled easly if neccessary and background printing in all applications. A good task manager like executive's and memory protection and virtual memory and memory manager to allow for unlimited chip ram. It should have all this yet remain backwardly compatible to Workbench 3.X programs and keep the look and feel that makes the Amiga the unique computer that it is. Amiga international should also supply an updated version of Envoy (or alternative networking software) with every copy of WB4. As well as built in support for Cybergraphx/Picasso 96, New Icons, MUI and AHI. Support to allow programs to be run in a resizable window on Workbench even ones which open there own screens Eg games, DPaint etc. They should also make it Hardrive version only to make the people who still have no Hardrive and are using Workbench 1.3 to upgrade their machines. Programs used to make the picture were:- Image FX 1.51 Personal paint 6.4 And Final Writer 4 lite to write this document. Picture designed on a 18meg Amiga 1200, with a 420meg hard drive, Viper mk2 28mhz 68030, Vidi Amiga 12 RT, Power Computing XL High density external disk drive, Reno portable CD-ROM drive, Commodore 1084 monitor. And hopefully soon a Tower case, a Phase 5 power up board And a graphics card. Some pictures and icons used were taken off various magazine cover mounted CD-ROMS and the copyright for this material belongs to the respective copyright holders.
