Descr: This is a set of X11R6.1 binaries for NetBSD-1.2 Uploader: Bernd Ernesti Author: Various Keywords: X11R6 This is a set of X11R6.1 binaries for NetBSD-1.2 This set was made with NetBSD-1.2 It has all the clients from the original X11R6.1 release. And this are the clients which were made from the contrib distribution and other X11 sources: fvwm - this is another Window Manager like twm, but uses less memory (Version 2.0.43) ctwm - again a Window Manager with better look then twm, but it uses more memory then fvwm (Version 3.3) xpm - this is a library which is need by some programm like ctwm, fvwm or boing (it includes two binaries: sxpm and xpmroot) (Version 3.4h) ico - animate an icosahedron or other polyhedron listres - list resources in widgets puzzle - 15-puzzle game for X rxvt - VT100 emulator for the X window system (a xterm replacement which uses less memory, but I still prefer xterm) seyon - X11 Telecommunications Package showfont - font dumper for X font server viewres - graphical class browser for Xt xarchie - X11 browser interface to archie (Version 2.0.10) xbiff - mailbox flag for X xcalc - scientific calculator for X xditview - display ditroff output xedit - simple text editor for X xeyes - a follow the mouse X demo (but it increases the load for about 0.8 if you use it) xev - print contents of X events xfontsel - point & click interface for selecting X11 font names xgas - animated simulation of an ideal gas xload - system load average display for X (Special thanks to Chris Hopps who send a good diff for it to the amiga-x mailinglist) xman - Manual page display program for the X Window System (it only shows manpages which are in catman dirs) xmessage - display a message or query in a window (X-based /bin/echo) xpr - print an X window dump xdpr - dump an X window directly to a printer xrlogin - start an xterm that uses rlogin or telnet to connect to a remote host xrsh - start an X program on a remote machine xlock - Locks the local X display until a password is entered (don't forget to use -nopanickeys to disable the Xserver shutdown with Ctrl-Alt-Backspace when you want real locking, see the extra notes later in this readme) (Version 3.10 of xlockmore) xtetris - X Window block dropping game (Version 2.6) xxgdb - X window system interface to the gdb debugger (Version 1.11) Not all programms have been tested by me, so please write me an email when you found a bug. Changes in the 04Jan95 binaries set: - bugfix for the fonts (there was a problem with double byte fonts) - xman, you dont't need to set MANPATH for it - xterm: utmp wasn't read, so w doesn't work - makedepend: bugfix - cleanup in the patchfile Changes in the 08Sept95 binaries set: - updated to X11R6 Patchlevel 12 - recover lose of an enhanced patchfile after the last release - fvwm is now the default Window Manager, see the comment in /usr/local/X11R6/lib/X11/xini/xinitrc how to change it back to twm Changes in the 08Jul96 binaries set: - updated to X11R6.1 - Xamiga24, Xcv64, Xcl, Xdaniver are now in one Xserver: Xamiga - the fonts are now compressed to save space - updated xpm to 3.4h - updated fvwm to 2.0.43 - updated xlockmore to 3.10 - removed xscreensaver with its dozend files - added xautolock pl10. Don't forget to disabel the buildin screen saver from Xamiga is you use it (xset s off) - made with gcc 2.7.2 - be carefull when you make your own binary with libXt: You need to link it with libSM, libICE and libXext or you get 'Undefined symbol's' It is possible that the filenames of the tar files are too long for ADos, so you maybe get an crash when you access this files under ADos. Please read the X11-Faq for installing X11. - The directory changed from /usr/local/X11R6 to /usr/local/X11R6.1. Please note that this is a different path than I used in the last X11R6 releases. 1. Install this files as root, because some of it have setuid or setgid flags which you lose when do this as an normal user. Then use the following command to install the files: gzcat | (cd / ; tar --unlink -xpf -) or if you want to watch what it does: gzcat | (cd / ; tar --unlink -xvpf -) where is one of the following files: X11R6_1.01Oct96-bin.NetBSD-1.2.tar.gz X11R6_1.01Oct96-fonts.NetBSD-1.2.tar.gz X11R6_1.01Oct96-include.NetBSD-1.2.tar.gz X11R6_1.01Oct96-lib.NetBSD-1.2.tar.gz X11R6_1.01Oct96-man.NetBSD-1.2.tar.gz 2. X11R6.1 has now only one Xserver which includes Xamiga24, Xcv64, Xcl and Xdaniver. You need to modify the next two file to use Xamiga on different graphic devices: /usr/local/X11R6/lib/X11/xdm/Xservers /usr/local/X11R6/lib/X11/xinit/xserverrc Xservers has this options: :0 local /usr/local/X11R6.1/bin/X -dev /dev/grf0 -width 680 -height 540 -nozap and xserverrc has this: X -dev /dev/grf0 -width 680 -height 540 -nozap Both files have a '# -xkbmap de' at the end (without the two ''). xkbmap is a XKEYBOARD extension to the Xserver which makes it possible to use keymaps without using xmodmap. Currently supported keymaps: usa1 (default) and de You can use the German Keymap if you remove the #. Take a look at the files in /usr/local/X11R6.1/lib/X11/xkb if you want to add other keymaps. Xamiga starts by default on grf0 (ECS/AGA) with a display width of 680 and a display height of 540. You need to remove '-width 680 -height 540' if you want to use the Xserver on another device. This two options works only on grf0. This are a list of possible devices (dev/grfX), where X: 0 = Device for the Amiga CustomChips Color/Monochrome (ECS/AGA) 1 = Device for the RetinaZ2 (This is NOT supported in this Xserver) 2 = Device for the RetinaZ3 Graphics board 3 = Device for Cirrus 5426 based Graphics Board (Picollo, Picollo SD64, Spectrum, PicassoII) 4 = Device for the A2410 board (This is NOT supported in this Xserver) 5 = Device for the CyberVision64 Graphics board 6-9 = General Gfx Board (Dumb Chunky Framebuffer) (see the two notes) Note1: Only grf6 is at the moment used: oMniBus, Domino and Merlin. grf7-grf9 are for future gfx cards. Note2: NetBSD 1.2 has a problem with Merlin being in ZorroIII mode, so you can only use the ZorroII mode at the moment. Every Xserver can use additional starting options. See the manpage for Xamiga for more informations. This is a small part of this manpage: This are additionnals common options for Xamiga: -debug disable non-blocking console mode -dev fn[:fn][:fn] name of device[s] to open -flipPixels switch colors 0 and 1 -mono force monochrome-only screen -zaphod disable active Zaphod mode -nozap disable CTRL-ALT-BACKSPACE key sequence -nopanickeys disable CTRL-ALT-BACKSPACE key sequence -emulatemiddle (or -2) Emulate middle button on 2-button mouse -emulateright (or -3) Emulate right button on 2-button mouse This are extra options for the Amiga Custom Chip Display (/dev/grf0): -width int set display width in pixels (amigaNative only) -height int set display height in pixels (amigaNative only) -depth int set display depth in pixels (amigaNative only) -X int set display X offset in pixels (amigaNative only) -Y int set display Y offset in pixels (amigaNative only) This are the extra options for Gfx Boards: -mode num set board into videomode num -noGX treat the GX as a dumb frame buffer -useHWC Use the Hardware Cursor (Gfx Board only) This are extra options for the CyberVision Board: -virtualW virtual screen width (CV64 only) -virtualH virtual screen height (CV64 only) You can change the graphics resolution for grf[356] with: X -dev /dev/grfX -mode ? where the '?' is an number for the resolution mode which you set with grfconfig and X is the device nummer. See the manpage for grfconfig for more informations. Here is a short example for /dev/grf5: - You need to initalize a list of grfmodes every time you boot NetBSD. The easiest way is to add this line at the end of /etc/rc.local echo 'loading grfmodes' /usr/sbin/grfconfig /dev/grf5 /etc/grfmodes - But you need convert your ADos monitor file to one which grfconfig understands. There are several converting tools on ADos: - ListModes for Picasso2 (VillageTronic) monitor files - ReadCVMonitor for CyberVision64 monitor files - grf[36] can use 9 modes (8 for gfx and 1 for the console) grf5 can use 25 modes (24 for gfx and 1 for the console) You can find some examples for different Monitors at the end of this README. The RetinaZ3 use a fixed set of gfx modes. This modes are in the Kernel, so grfconfig does not work: -mode 1 = 80x46 (640x506) 31.5kHz -mode 2 = 96x54 (768x594) 38kHz -mode 3 = 96x54 (768x594) 64kHz -mode 4 = GFX-8 (640x480) 31.5kHz -mode 5 = GFX-8 (640x480) 38kHz -mode 6 = GFX-8 (800x600) 38.5kHz -mode 7 = GFX-8 (1024x768) 64kHz -mode 8 = GFX-8 (1120x896) 64kHz -mode 9 = GFX-8 (1152x910) 76kHz -mode 10 = GFX-8 (1182x848) 73kHz -mode 11 = GFX-8 (1280x1024) 64.5kHz -mode 12 = GFX-8 (1280x1024) 75.5kHz ***EXCEEDS CHIP LIMIT!!!*** -mode 13 = GFX-16 (640x480) 31.8kHz -mode 14 = GFX-16 (800x600) 38.5kHz -mode 15 = GFX-16 (1024x768) 42.8kHz -mode 16 = GFX-16 (864x648) 50kHz -mode 17 = GFX-16 (1024x768) 48.5kHz ***EXCEEDS CHIP LIMIT!!!*** -mode 18 = GFX-24 (320x200 d) 35kHz -mode 19 = GFX-24 (640x400) 31.4kHz -mode 20 = GFX-24 (724x482) 37kHz -mode 21 = GFX-24 (800x600) 38kHz -mode 22 = GFX-24 (800x600) 44kHz ***EXCEEDS CHIP LIMIT!!!*** -mode 23 = GFX-24 (1024x768) 32kHz-i I AM NOT RESPONSABLE FOR ANY DAMAGE YOU HAVE BY USING THIS MODES. Note that on some setups, the devices /dev/kbd, /dev/mouse and /dev/view?? have been created to be accessable only by superuser; each Xserver needs to open these devices, so all Xserver here are SetUid root. When you don't like this you need to give everyone access to the devices with: chmod 666 /dev/kbd /dev/mouse /dev/view?? this chmod 666 for /dev/kbd, /dev/mouse and /dev/view?? is a possible cause of a security hole if your machine is ever used multi-user. 3. Then add the follwing diff if you don't have an link from /usr/X11R6 to /usr/local/X11R6.1 and you want to see the manpages with the man command from NetBSD and not with the xman command. Copy this file too another file and then remove all lines before and after this diff and then use this command to apply it: cat otherfilename | (cd / ; patch -p) *** /etc/man.conf-orig Sun Dec 17 13:09:23 1995 --- /etc/man.conf Tue Sep 3 20:21:17 1996 *************** *** 7,22 **** _whatdb /usr/share/man/whatis.db # Subdirectories for paths ending in '/', IN SEARCH ORDER. ! _subdir cat1 man1 cat8 man8 cat6 man6 cat2 man2 cat3 man3 cat4 man4 cat5 man5 cat7 man7 cat3f man3f cat9 man9 # Files typed by suffix and their commands. # Note the order, .Z must come after .[1-9].Z, or it will match first. _suffix .0 _build .0.Z /usr/bin/zcat %s _build .0.gz /usr/bin/gunzip -c %s ! _build .[1-9] /usr/bin/nroff -man %s ! _build .[1-9].Z /usr/bin/zcat %s | /usr/bin/nroff -man ! _build .[1-9].gz /usr/bin/gunzip -c %s | /usr/bin/nroff -man _build .tbl /usr/bin/tbl %s | /usr/bin/nroff -man _build .tbl.Z /usr/bin/zcat %s | /usr/bin/tbl | /usr/bin/nroff -man _build .tbl.gz /usr/bin/gunzip -c %s | /usr/bin/tbl | /usr/bin/nroff -man --- 7,22 ---- _whatdb /usr/share/man/whatis.db # Subdirectories for paths ending in '/', IN SEARCH ORDER. ! _subdir cat1 man1 cat8 man8 cat6 man6 cat2 man2 cat3 man3 cat4 man4 cat5 man5 cat7 man7 cat3f man3f cat9 man9 catn mann # Files typed by suffix and their commands. # Note the order, .Z must come after .[1-9].Z, or it will match first. _suffix .0 _build .0.Z /usr/bin/zcat %s _build .0.gz /usr/bin/gunzip -c %s ! _build .[1-9,n] /usr/bin/nroff -man %s ! _build .[1-9,n].Z /usr/bin/zcat %s | /usr/bin/nroff -man ! _build .[1-9,n].gz /usr/bin/gunzip -c %s | /usr/bin/nroff -man _build .tbl /usr/bin/tbl %s | /usr/bin/nroff -man _build .tbl.Z /usr/bin/zcat %s | /usr/bin/tbl | /usr/bin/nroff -man _build .tbl.gz /usr/bin/gunzip -c %s | /usr/bin/tbl | /usr/bin/nroff -man *************** *** 28,40 **** # directory with all of the subdirectories listed for the keyword _subdir. # default ! _default /usr/{share,X11R6,X386,X11,X11R4,contrib,gnu,local}/{man,man/old}/ # Other sections that represent complete man subdirectories. The next step is to add the path for /usr/local/X11R6.1/bin into your .profile and/or .cshrc . .profile: change PATH=/sbin:/usr/sbin:/bin:/usr/bin to PATH=/sbin:/usr/sbin:/bin:/usr/bin:/usr/local/X11R6.1/bin .cshrc change set path=(/sbin /usr/sbin /bin /usr/bin) to set path=(/sbin /usr/sbin /bin /usr/bin /usr/local/X11R6.1/bin) 5. Then tell the system that there are more shared librarys by adding /usr/local/X11R6.1/lib to the ldconfig command in /etc/rc.local by replacing ldconfig with ldconfig /usr/local/X11R6.1/lib or when you have other shared libs in /usr/local/lib to ldconfig /usr/local/X11R6.1/lib /usr/local/lib 6. This X11R6.1 has the fvwm2 as the Defautl Window Manager, you can edit the configuration file ( /usr/local/X11R6.1/lib/X11/fvwm2/.fvwm2rc ) for your needs. The .fvwm2rc which comes with this set opens one xterm, three virtuall screens with 4 windows, xload and xbiff. For more information about fvwm read the manpage of fvwm and look in .fvwm2rc for InitFunction which start this clients. 7. And this is the last step: Reboot your system for ldconfig and to tell the shell about the new commands in /usr/local/X11R6.1/bin and start X11 with: startx and when that work you can think about using xdm, see the manpage for xdm and the files in /usr/local/X11R6.1/lib/xdm, BUT this are only examples and may not work. 8. Example grfmodes files: Again: I AM NOT RESPONSABLE FOR ANY DAMAGE YOU HAVE BY USING THIS MODES. USE IT AT YOUR OWN RISK. You can see the current list of modes if you use grfconfig without the modefilename: grfconfig /dev/grfX where X is your device you want to use (3,5-9) And here are some example grfmodes: 15KHz (15-16KHz, 14MHz, 50-70Hz) # grfconfig file generated by ReadCVMonitor (c) Michael Teske 1995 # # num clock wid hi dep hbs hss hse hbe ht vbs vss vse vbe vt # # Chunk MD08 Size [132] :4 8-Bit Modes. #Header: fffffff2ffffffffffffffbdfffffffb 1 7000000 320 256 8 320 376 416 432 448 256 272 277 309 312 # Interlaced Mode!
