6 Connecting to the Internet

6.1 Via the AmiTCP Start Icon

There are two ways to connect to the Internet via NetConnect. The first way is to click the AmiTCP Start Icon.

Goto the NetConnect drawer that has just been installed to your hard drive. Within that drawer is a sub-drawer called "AmiTCP". Within there is the AmiTCP Start icon as shown above.

When you click this icon the AmiTCP Dialler will start to dial - see the section below for more information.

6.2 From the Icon Bar

Reboot your computer, you'll be presented with the NetConnect icon bar, consisting of eight icons.

To connect to the Internet:

  1. Click on START icon - the plug and socket

  2. The AmiTCP Dial window will appear and dial your ISP

  3. When the Dialler sends the loginname and password connection will occur and your ISP will most likely send some information to the dial window. Demon Internet, for example, sends the latest operational info (ie. info about their current status) and then sends a HELLO command to say you are connected.

If you are connecting to an ISP that uses PAP you will jump from the image showing the dial sequence (point 2 above) to the following GUI:

This GUI just informs a user who has connected to an ISP with PAP that login has succeeded and that they are now connected.

  4. If you are running the NetConnect Icon Bar the start/stop will change to the stop position (ie. showing that you are now connected):

If you pressed this start/stop button again (when it is in the stop position you would be disconnected from the Internet.

Now you are connected, but what do you do? By clicking on the other icons you can launch your web browser, FTP client, mail reader etc.
