|RConstitution:|N Republic. The islands are a French Overseas department.
|RNature and climate:|N Eight small islands in two groups near the SW coast of Newfoundland. All islands are rocky.
|RPeople:|N Descendants of French settlers.
|REconomy:|N Most people are occupied in fishing which also accounts for most (95%) of export incomes. The islands are not suited for agriculture, but some vegetables are grown and livestock kept for local consumption.
|RHistory:|N The islands were settled from France in the 17th century. It became a French territory in 1816, from 1976 it was made a French Overseas Territory and in 1985 a Territorial Collectivity. 
