They are mountainous and partly forested volcanic islands, named after the discoverer Juan Fernandez. Alexander Selkirk, a Scottish sailor, who is supposed to have inspired Daniel Defoe to write the story Robinson Crusoe, lived on one of these islands 1704 to 1709.
