At Ascension a great amount of sea turtles gather for reproduction. Also a lot of rabbits and thousands of coots breed at the island. A flock of donkeys live at Ascension. Mild climate with little variation through the year. Average temperature in January 18 - 24°C and in July 24 - 29°C. Percipitation 300 - 900 mm. |RPeople:|N Half of the population immigrated from St Helena, the other half various ethnic groups. |REconomy:|N Half of the population are communications workers. UK has a communications center here, and the US a satellite tracking center. Also agriculture and stockraising. |RHistory:|N The island was discovered by portuguese on Ascension Day 1501, hence the name. Later British naval base. 1922 transferred from the navy to the St Helena colony.
