MAKE YOUR OWN GLASSES The Do-It-Yourself 3-D glasses kit supplied with Stereop-Jr contains one red and one blue lens, and an instruction sheet with a template. Follow the instructions on the sheet to make a pair of child-size glasses. If you need another pair for an adult, read the instructions below. It's easy to make your own glasses, but it's important to use the right material for the lenses. You may be able to get deep red and blue transparent film at an art or craft supply shop, but the best place is a shop that sells stage lighting filters ("gels"). Your local amateur theatre company might be able to help you. A company called Lee Filters makes them. Contact: Lee Filters Central Way, Walworth Industrial Estate Andover, Hampshire SP10 5AN, UK Telephone 01264 366245 Lee #132 (Medium Blue) and Lee #106 (Primary Red) will work well. This {[P05,4,7] diagram } shows you how to make a pair of 3-D glasses large enough to fit over most regular glasses. You can also use the diagram to test lens materials. If you have a 14-inch monitor, the glasses shown in the diagram will be close to the actual size, and you'll be able to trace them directly off the screen. If the yellow box around the diagram isn't around 25.7cm wide and 14cm high, you may be able to adjust your monitor's horizontal and vertical sizes. Use tracing paper and a soft fine-point marker. Just make a dot at each corner, then transfer the image to a piece of light cardboard (black is best) by pushing a pin through each dot. Then connect the pin-pricks with a ruler and pencil. Cut out two centre pieces and two ear pieces. Cut red and blue lenses, each 4.2 by 2.7cm. Cut narrow strips of double- sided tape and place them on one centre piece as shown in the diagram. Centre the filters over the eye holes (red for left eye, blue for right) and place them carefully over the tape. Carefully align the other centre section over the first one and press them firmly together. Stick on the ear pieces with more tape.
