What is JamMail?

JamMail is a network frontend system, for Amiga computers running
at least AmigaDos 2.04 (Kickstart 37.175).

It handles FTS1, Wazoo, EMSI and UUCP type networking sessions. FTS1,
Wazoo and EMSI are the handshaking methods used for FidoNet Technology
type networks. UUCP sessions are handled by launching a standard
UUCICO program, available in packages such as AmigaUUCP, or wUUCP.

For those with FTP access, we now have our own Jam support directory.

ftp birch.mathstat.uottawa.ca (137.122.49.62) in the /JAM directory.

New archives are now automatically sent to birch. Every so often, one
of these archives will be sent up to AmiNet as well.

I'd like to remind people that the JamMail FAQ is included in the archive.

 - work on JamPhone GUI, JamMail Cfg GUI and JamMail Mailer GUI will likely
hold up future versions for a while.

 - One note for some people that seemed to have missed this point. JamFlow
does *NOT* use the jamscan.cfg file. jamscan.cfg is only used by JamScan,
so if you are no longer running jamscan, you do not need jamscan.cfg.

Changes - Feb 26th, 1996

 - POLL command now uses default domain system as well.

 - doing some more work on public screen stuff..

 - new "jammail.pic" included now that "JamMail" is on its own screen now.
This is how it currently looks on my system.

 - ACK!!! I can't belive this. Over two years into development, and
inbound UUCP sessions weren't async. Outbound has been for a while!

This should allow the scheduler to continue dialing out on other lines
while there's an inbound UUCP session on one line.

Changes - Feb 21st, 1996

 - UUCICO options fields raised in length (to 79 characters).

Changes - Feb 14th, 1996

 - Changes in inbound emsi banner stuff, should make things look a little
   better and possibly work faster.

 - small changes for wpl.library and emsi.library to fix "FTN" defaults.

Changes - Feb 11th, 1996

 - WPL.library and emsi.library updated to use "FTN" default domain above
Zone 6 and "FidoNet" for Zones 1->6.

Changes - Feb 10th, 1996

 - If adaptive dialing was disabled (why anyone would do that, I don't
know :-) two labels would be together with no code between, and that
would cause the second label to be thrown away, which causes problems.

 - Default domain is "FTN" - "Fidonet Technology Network" for any Zone where
a default hasn't been configured. Zones 1-6 have been configured with
   a domain of "FidoNet".

This change is in JamFlow, I will be updating sections in JamMail and
   WPL to match.

Changes - January 29th, 1996

 - raised size of "PostFido" execute command. (to 128 bytes instead of 60)

Changes - January 25th (or so)

 - fixed bug that caused some funky characters to show up before some
postsession commands in the config file.

Changes - January 17th, 1996

 - fixed tiny bug in JamFlow. All files would be deleted. It now supports
   truncation as well.

Changes - January 15th, 1996

 - JamFlow added to archive. It will eventually be released as a seperate
package, but for now, its only with JamMail.

JamFlow is a complete replacement for JamScan, for most users out
there. It is designed to take an outbound directory prepared by your
tosser for a TrapDoor style mailer, and convert it over to Xferq,
which is what JamMail/WPL uses. Currently it has no config file at
all. You simply run it, after you run your mail tossing program.

The one current flaw, is that you can only have one domain per zone,
so if you belong to two networks that use the same zone, JamFlow
won't be usable to you. For most users however, this is not a problem.

January 1st, 1996

Happy New Year Guys and Gals!

Changes - November 1st

 - Quick Domains.doc file written. It explains some problems with fidonet
   addresses.

Changes - October 31st

 - ARGHGHGHGHGHGHGHGHGHGHGHGHG

found (I think) the problem with calling extreamly slow EMSI systems.

I managed to have a 10 second timeout for turnaround time. This is
when the other system is decoding your emsi packet, before they send
the Acknowledge (that it was a good packet) and before they send
   you their packet.

This has been raised, and has solved the problem with the system I
was connecting to (his was taking 15 seconds to decode and respond).

Changes - October 18th

 - Oops, looks like I included a bad version of "JamScan" in previous
archive. I really need to stop working on too many things at the
   same time.

 - attempting to track down tiny bug in emsi handshaking code that
causes it to hangup for no "known" reason.

Changes - October 13th

 - due to problems with Rebundle conflicting with Xferq bugs, rebundle
and unbundle will be removed from the package until another solution
   is found.

Changes - October 3rd

 - improved rebundle/unbundle internal documentation, and cleaned up
   visual debugging information.

 - new wplemsi.library. should handle inbound EMSI sessions better.
(I did something really stupid :-)

Changes - October 2nd

 - more work on rebundle/unbundle.

Changes - October 1st

 - /SMART or /SIMPLE window flags specifically set depending on your
   preference.

 - rebundle and unbundle programs included in archive for systems transfering
UUCP bundles through a fidonet session. This combines 20 X.* or D.* files
into a single archive for better transfer rates.

Changes - September 30th

 - working on inbound EMSI handshaking. Using "smooth" IO like outbound
EMSI now.. consider this extreamly beta right now..

 - fixed problem in both inbound and outbound emsi that might have
   caused a spontaneous reboot :-)

Changes - september 28th

 - stripping off trailing spaces from options in config file (like
EMSI AKA string in alternate AKA configs).

Changes - September 25th

 - JamMail will now open its own public screen.

Changes - September 24th

 - fixed "Quit" option in "other global options menu".

 - added ability to set priority for scheduler task.

Changes - September 23rd

 - minor modification to the way Wazoo sessions are logged. Looks a bit
   more like an EMSI session.

 - finished configuration menu for setting default zones..

 - removed "inbound quick emsi check". This was stuff I working on
last month, and forgot about it when I made the archive last week.

Changes - September 21st

 - more work finishing up library support of alternate default domains.

 - full 8 bit encoding/decoding of EMSI data streams is done (for
those non-natively english people with alternate characters in their
   names).

Changes - September 20th

 - more cleaning up for outbound EMSI handshaking.

 - starting support on alternate default domains (per zone).

Changes - September 18th

 - finished almost total replacement of outbound EMSI handshaking code.
Should be smoother on the CPU and faster.

Changes - September 15th

 - fixed outbound initial handshake sequence.. seems to identify emsi
and non-emsi systems much faster now

Changes - September 10th

 - starting complete cleanup of wplemsi.library

Changes - August 25th

 - more timing modifications to wplemsi.library

 - going to add a "Fast Emsi Check" for inbound sessions. This is enabled
when "extra net front" is *NOT* being used. This should remove the
requirement of the extra net front for most systems.

Changes - August 23rd

 - playing with wplemsi.library

Changes - August 5th

 - made sure "Scheduler GUI mode" was not able to be enabled since it doesn't
exist anyways. People were enabling it, and then wondering why they didn't
   have a scheduler.

Changes - July 27th

 - added s/zmhon and s/zmhoff scripts to be executed by some "Cron" program
to be executed before and after Zone mail hour. You may want to run them
once per hour. normally, you'll also want to execute the zmhoff script in
your user-startup so the variables have a default value.

Changes - July 24th

 - fixed a bug in the scheduler relating to dial sets. I don't know how long
its been there, but it slightly disabled some of the functionality.

Changes - July 21st

 - JamLogTrim added to archive. Some people were requesting some easy way
   to trim their logs.

 - Date added to logging of connect string.

 - JTPhone added back into archive. It was removed when JamTool was replaced
but is still needed to edit the phone book. Hopefully its replacement will
   be available soon.

Changes - June 19th

 - fixed bug in POLL where fidonet addresses were parsed wrong if the
   domain was given.

Changes - June 18th

 - jammail.library and POLL updated to reflect changes relating to
   JamSched

 - JamSched cleaned up some more - hopefully fixed up randomly huge numbers.

 - POLL program now has "FORCE" option.

Changes - June 9th

 - Maintenance release - mainly to clean up a few things

 - JamSched - the replacement for JamTool is now included in the package.
PLEASE NOTE! Unless there's something wrong with JamSched, there is no
reason for JamTool to be on your systems anymore.

 - JamSched now compiles with the Adaptive dialing system for dialing UUCP
   systems as well.

Changes - April 22nd

 - new jammail.library added to completely remove transfers of those 0 byte
POLL packets, and it makes the POLL command safer to use for non-fidonet
   sessions.

Changes - April 20th

 - wpl.library updated to support these long aka strings for connects.

 - back to working on jamroute

Changes - April 13th

 - tiny modification to wpl.library transfer window relating to the CPS field.

Changes - April 6th

 - Oops, I screwed up with the login banner message. It should be displayed
again now if you have one configured.

Changes - April 4th

 - More fixes in the User Login menu

 - Login message now configurable. All JamMail variables (listed in the
InboundNotify.doc) are available to be used in this string.

Changes - April 3rd

 - some minor changes to jammail.library and the emsi.library hopefully
to fix a possible allignment problem. Usually shows up with inbound
   EMSI sessions.

 - login timeouts hopefully fixed up a bit. It seems there was a couple
cases where the main login prompt wouldn't hangup even after a few user
   timeouts.

 - The NetworkFrontend option is disabled if UserCommands are disabled.
There's no reason for having both like that.

 - Term/Fax menu cleaned up a bit (editing of disabled options isn't possible).

Changes - April 1st

 - Visual Layout manager minimum window heights lowered to 30 to allow a
two line window with an 8 point font.

Changes - March 30th

 - Fixed (I think) Long Distance calling log for Fidonet/EMSI sessions.

 - XprTransfer window fixed a bit.

Changes - March 29th

 - UUCP mail bundles now identified during fidonet ZedZip/Zap transfers.

 - Small change in CfgBBSLaunch->Edit to fix display problem.

Changes - March 25th

 - log lines are now up to 1024 characters, so entire EMSI AKA lists are going
to be on single lines (one for known, one for unknown, and one for bad).

Changes - March 23rd

 - minor changes to config file (some size values were converted to chars instead
   of ints)

 - another minor change to wplemsi.library cleaning up output.

Changes - March 21st

 - new version of JamMail.library added - this one adds a function that will
allow me to delete all t:poll files on an inbound or outbound session so
those 0 byte files won't be transmitted to other FidoNet sites.

Changes - March 16th

 - replaced "screen mode" selection code. Now all modes supported by your system
are available, not just modes that are CBM supplied. Remember, JamMail doesn't
actually open a screen during Mailer operations yet though.

 - slightly modified emsi.library to timeout less often during turnarounds.

 - emsi.library also makes sure TRX# hex number is upper case. This shouldn't be
required, but some other mailers may crap out. This is only relevent on inbound
sessions with the turnaround reply packet. The outbound packet was already in
   upper case.

Changes - March 15th

 - some work on visual preferences mode, fixed a few things.

Changes - March 14th

 - New window positions setup - all of your windows will need to be re-positioned again

 - Usefull window defaults are now generated upon startup. They will likely still need
to be adjusted to take into account overscan.

 - fixed a massive bug in the Layout Manager, where the window size for line 1 might
end up being 0x0 which would cause a big problem next time you went into the Layout
   manager.

 - Layout manager would allow positioning of LD Phone Window when the Phone window was
enabled, but didn't check to see if LDPhone Logs period, were enabled.

Changes - March 13th

 - updated xprclock.library included - fixes problems with 68000/010 machines.

 - working on adding all of the GUI config options, the actual GUI is not in. (yet!)

 - work on LogWindow/File options menu - configurable for setting which log system
to use - the GUI one is obviously not installed yet, but configurable :-)
For those of you using LogProc with other programs, you will still be able to use
it with JamMail, or use the new stuff that will be built into the Scheduler system.

 - Visual Layout manager now generates default minimum window size for either the
GUI scheduler, or the TEXT scheduler based on font size.

 - LD Phone Log options updated to reflect the fact LogProc may not be used.

Changes - March 12th

 - put better version of JamScan back into the archive

 - fixed Type command for ZoneMail text file, it used the pagination mode.

 - reorganizing Scheduler and Log Options menus to place things in a more
logical place, and preparing for adding configs relating to GUI scheduler.

 - added "Other Line Configs" for options from other menus that were more
line related (globally, so not appropriate for the line cfgs menu) than
   where they were.

 - Added "Supra CallerID" mode, essentially, the Supra modems pesent the
"NAME" before they present the NUMBER info, others present the NUMBER
   first.

Changes - March 11th

 - fixed another Enforcer hit in Line Cfgs -Add Line option.

 - recompiled WPL library to clean up some of the stuff I had been working on
   mid-February.

 - Valid/Unknown/Bad addresses should each all showup in a single line, instead
of splitting them up into multiple lines each.

 - Version numbers will now only change when I make a Clean source compile, not
when I do single C file compiles - the numbers were going up waaaay too fast :-)

Changes - March 10th

 - finishing up Visual preferences options - essentially everything works
except the actual opening of a new screen during mailer operation.
(let me know if something else isn't quite working).

 - removed "Open Custom" option since JamMail can't operate with a non-public
   screen anyways.

Changes - March 9th

 - fixed (argh!!!) line stack setting. No value lower than 4k is allowed,
and if one is found, it will be set to 10000 bytes.

 - Redesigned UUCP configs screen, to add option to disable UUCP2 sessions.

 - added textfile option to BBS launch, this will be displayed before bbs's
   are launched.

 - added new filename to cfgtextfiles menu, this textfile will be displayed
to calling users if Zone Mail Hour is in effect.

 - typo fixed for Clock/NRC launches.

Changes - Feb 5, 1995

 - fixing a few things in Visual preferences section.

Changes - Feb 4, 1995

 - Fixed a bug i'd been searching for in the EMSI handling stuff for ages.
should speed things up a tad.

Changes - Feb 3, 1995

 - fixed enforcer hit in "Add New Line" option.

Changes - Feb 2, 1995

 - fixed bug in jammail.library causing the openlibrary count of xferq and
   wpl to be waaaay off.

 - fixed file request handling (sometimes the inbound .req file was being
   deleted too fast).

 - inbound EMSI timeout value raised a bit.

Changes - Jan 26, 1995

 - Visual preferences screen now visable, and all window options are used
in here, instead of in the LogFile menu.

Changes - Jan 24, 1995

 - Adding Visual Preferences section (hidden V menu, for those of you that actually
read this file). Not all functions are working, but window layout menu option
   is.

 - wpl.library 0.99.30 - "Abort" RexxMsg command now aborts file transfers as well.
   (s:killjm will use this)

 - wplemsi.library 0.35.20 - now checks for Abort as well.

Changes - Jan 14, 1995

 - fixed stupid bug with Inbound Notify configs - it wasn't launching correctly.

Changes - Jan 13, 1995

 - bibi messages removed from xprzedzap.library.

 - InboundNotify.Man documentation added.

 - Tiny adjustment for outbound EMSI Handshakes - should be a bit quicker

Changes - Jan 12, 1995

 - Finishing up new Inbound File Notification Support.

 - New Configuration Menu setup for this.

Changes - Jan 10, 1995

 - fixing up File request support. TrapDoor style commands will be supported,
and XferqSH is removed in place of JFreqSH.

 - Removed all XferqSH related options in configuration editor.

Changes - Jan 9, 1995

 - added simple jamtool.phone book. New users will need this, but old users
will *NOT* want to move this into s: as you may overwrite your old one.

Changes - Jan 8, 1995

 - Added NetworkFront option (login menu), which makes network sessions
more reliable for some systems calling in. Can be disabled.

 - Fixed bug where some "Unknown" inbound sessions were showing up with
bad FTN addresses, and things like Freq's wouldn't work.

Changes - January 3rd 1995

 - fixed bug in jammail.library lookup functions, in that -Unlisted-
   numbers were still being dialed.

 - user "freqaddress" removed to make space on that menu for new options
   soon to be added.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Slap Happy New Year Guys!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Changes - December 13th

 - Been busy with school, exams, and JamGate, so haven't had much time to work
   on JamMail much.

 - partial direct-zap support re-enabled for those running versions of xprzedzap
that support DirectZap. I'm not satisfied with the reliability of any of
the DirectZap supporting versions so do not included it. If you do wish to
use it, edit your s:Jammail.cfg file and put a 1 beside DirectZap.

Note: I myself don't recommend using any of these other libraries, so if you
have any problems related to the file transfers, you'll be on your own.

Changes - November 21st

 - cleaning up JamScan

 - Put Docs files in a sub-directory

 - added some docs on supporting fax - one message is more directed to
TrapDoor, but the suggestions about Init strings and such are all valid.

Changes - November 18th

 - fixed division by 0 bug (I think) when transfering 1 byte files.

 - moved back up to one of the newer JTPhone's that were still working
   - I went back far too far Oct 20.

Changes - November 9th

 - removed extra space in address field, after address list in EMSI handshakes.
It shouldn't have mattered to anyone, but didn't really need to be there
   anyways.

Changes - November 4th

 - some visual changes in the LineCfg areas. Fixed some inputs.

 - POLL program now shows priority it is setting the poll packet at.

 - added SIMPLE and BORDERLESS options to Logs and Windows menu.
   - using a SIMPLE refresh, ConClip will be able to clip text from the
     modem windows.

 - Added NAME response, for CallerID systems that present the name as well.

 - Input requestor was one digit short on a number of inputs. This is now
   fixed.

 - The System "Line Numbers" do not need to be numbers. If you aren't using
the $(LINE) variable as a number in a bbslaunch string or something like
that where it needs to be numeric, you can label your lines however you
want. Remember, that this name is the one used for the call port if you
have custom dial scripts of your own.

Changes - November 2nd

 - more visual changes to editor to make things fit better in the window.
