"Not another one!" I hear you cry. Well read on and you will see why this is better than some of the others floating around. @{" Legal " link Legal} @{" Background " link Background} @{" Features " link Features} @{" Installation " link Install} @{" Addresses " link Addresses} @endnode @node Legal "Legal Notices" @smartwrap The TragicWB package consists of the files: Install TragicWB Install TragicWB.info MWB-palette.pre MWB-palette.pre.info TragicWB TragicWB.guide TragicWB.guide.info (hereafter "the files"). This package is copyright © Ben Hutchings 1996. It may freely be distributed provided (i)   no charge is made for distribution above the costs of duplication, distribution and the media used, (ii)  the files are distributed together, and (iii) none of the files are altered, except, if the distributor so wishes, by converting them into an archived or compressed form from which they can be retrieved unaltered using readily-available free software tools. Software released under these conditions is often known as Freeware. As far as I am aware, the icon images are © 1996 The NewIcons Team and may freely be distributed on their own. @endnode @node Background "Background to TragicWB" @smartwrap As you may be aware, many non-commercial Amiga developers have started using 8-colour icons in their distributions - often without 4-colour alternatives. Many of these icons are designed for use with the package "Magic Workbench" (MWB), which is Shareware. These icons will not display correctly unless you are using the MWB palette and, what's more, some kind of palette hack to ensure that the MWB palette is used for colours 4-7 even if you have more than 8 colours on your Workbench screen. The MWB package contains a "palette daemon" which will do this for you, but $20 (or whatever MWB costs these days) seems a bit much to pay for a palette hack. In my opinion, MWB is an overpriced collection of tasteless icons and backdrops coupled with a rather half-hearted palette hack. NewIcons offers a much better general solution to the problem of controlling icon colours and doesn't tie you down to a specific set of colours for your icons. NewIcons is also free. But unfortunately NewIcons is unsuitable for use on slow machines, so there are a lot of MWB icons out there - MUI programs in particular tend to have MWB icons. There are a number of free palette hacks around which are supposed to make sure MWB icons are displayed correctly on >8-colour screens, in the same way that MWB's "palette daemon" does. I think TragicWB is the most complete. @endnode @node Features "Features of TragicWB" @smartwrap · Unlike some other palette hacks, TragicWB does not require you to enter the desired palette values. Since it is meant for use with MWB icons, pens 4-7 will automatically be set to the correct values. · Every time you re-open the Workbench screen, the pens will be reset. · TragicWB is very small - because it has a simple function. This also means that it doesn't have any more features for me to list. TO DO: · Automatically reset the Workbench screen if someone else has pens 4-7 at startup. · Make TragicWB removable. · Add a hack to make MWB icons look tasteful. :-) @endnode @node Install "Installing TragicWB" @smartwrap TragicWB requires OS 3.0 or later. If you boot with an earlier release of the OS then TragicWB will simply not run. To install TragicWB on your system, open the icon "Install TragicWB" and follow the prompts. Help is available at each stage of the installation. You should always answer Yes when asked whether to run TragicWB at boot time. If you run TragicWB at a later point, one or more of the pens it requires (pens 4-7) may already have been allocated by another program. In this case, you will see that MWB icons still don't look right. You will have to reset the Workbench screen by fiddling with the ScreenMode preferences, or opening and closing the Workbench screen from some other program that has this option. @endnode @node Addresses "Contact addresses" @{b}Author of TragicWB@{ub} snail Ben Hutchings 43 Harrison Close Reigate Surrey RH2 7HS email benjamin.hutchings@worcester.oxford.ac.uk WWW http://users.ox.ac.uk/~worc0223 (for support pages, append /amiga/freeware) @{b}Where to find NewIcons@{ub} ftp ftp.wustl.de:/pub/aminet/util/wb/NewIcons.lha (or from most Aminet mirrors) @{b}Current authors of NewIcons@{ub} snail Eric Sauvageau 5338 10th Avenue Montreal, Quebec CANADA H1Y-2G6 email dream@step.polymtl.ca IRC RMerlin (on EFnet) snail Phil Vedovatti 2424 41st Ave E. #370F Seattle, Washington 98112 USA email vedovatt@u.washington.edu IRC Aesculape (on EFnet) @endnode
