14th July 1996 Internet Set v4.0 ****************************** E-Mail andersok@mail.bogo.co.uk for a moan if need be. Remember your ISP must use Dynamic IP Address assigning. -------------------------------------------------------- Recommended:- A1200 and 4mb ram is a good system but any Amiga with OS 3.x or Amiga with OS 2.1 with 2mb Chip ram and 1mb Fast ram will do, but you won't see the pictures in Web pages etc. You must have at least OS 2.1, 14.4k modem, 1mb chip+1mb fast & Hard drive. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- People still using OS 1.2/1.3/2.0 1mb ram etc:- "Get a life your holding the rest of us back and no software houses etc even care if you exist" "Plus this will be of no use to you what so ever HARD LUCK stick to BBS's" ******************************************************************************** * * * IMPORTANT! IMPORTANT! This entire system requires ARexx (OS 2.04+) * * * ******************************************************************************** READ ALL OF THIS DOCUMENT BEFORE PROCEEDING (print if can) >>>>> especially the **** Notes etc <<<<< Installation:- a) Drag the drawer called "AmiTCP-4.0" to your Work: partition. It must be on your Work: partition or the Net_Assigns won't work. If you have not got a Work: partition you will have to edit your User-Startup (OS 2.04+) file and make an assign to the name of the partition/drawer you installed this called "Work:". (i.e. if you installed it in a partition is called Progs: you put "assign Work: Progs:". Once The AmiTCP-4.0 drawer is in place double click the "Install" icon (little blue box) to install and setup the necessary bits:- ** The Install script expects to find a WBStartup drawer if you have not got ** one (i.e. below OS 2.04) then you must open the file "Make_Assigns" which ** has been put in your C: drawer in a text editor and CUT and Paste the ** contents into your User_Startup/Startup-Sequence or what ever. Sorry but I can't believe people still use lower than OS 3.x as you won't be able to see any Gif's in your Web pages as you can't use datatypes. Plus you can't auto view/play files in Web pages as you need Multiview. b) When all that is done and your happy reboot to make changes. c) Now go to your AmiTCP-4.0 drawer and you will see a drawer called "Help". In here are the configurarion editors as shown below. (Read Net-Set_info.list) Also you will see an icon called "Dashboard" this will launch the Amiga Dashboard. ISP.prefs (see point 6) below) sets your ISP details:- --------- Host Name of ISP (i.e. blobby.co.net) Host IP of ISP (i.e. 123.456.789.1) Name Server IP of ISP (i.e. 123.456.789.4) Phone Number of ISP phone number used to dial in for logging on) Slip command for ISP the command that tells your ISP you want to use Slip/Cslip protocol (i.e. slip NOBBY) Asked for password? Amount of password prompts to expect (see Note). User.prefs (see point 5) below) sets your User details:- ---------- LogIn Name (your personal login name i.e. nobby) Password (your personal password i.e. nobby13) Amiga Speed (What CPU your Amiga has see point 5) below) Modem_Change (see Modem Change Note) changes AT code string. ------------ d) Now double click "Net-Set.prefs" and enter your "login name" and "password" as given by your ISP where prompted pressing enter after each plus your modem speed. With modem speeds you have two choices (A) = 030 and (B) = 020, but I have used the 030 speed setting with a 14.4k modem on an A1200 and have had no problems, but cheap modems and old Amigas need this setting. Even some A1200 Amigas have trouble (they were some made everywhere) Try it out but if you get loads of errors use setting (B) it won`t do any harm. Enter your login name and password exactly as shown on the sheet from your ISP. Remember most Internet Service Providers use Unix computer systems which are case sensitive (i.e. "Nobby" and "nobby" are totally different in Unix) so if any of the information from your ISP uses capitals enter them exactly as shown. e) Now double click ISP.prefs and enter your ISP's Host Name Host IP etc as shown point 4) above. f) Now turn on your modem double click the Dashboard Icon (you could leave it out on the desktop for easier access) and choose Log On from the Amiga Dashboard. If all ok you will see a window open on the bottom of the screen telling you what it's doing and all that. When the you have clicked OK in the AmiTCP window that pops (after reading the conditions) some more stuff will come up in the window then the window will say:- TCP Assigned______________Now Click the Close Gadget This means you are connected. If the window does not say the above or another window opens with error messages then you have not entered in your details properly. (see below) ** You can re-enter them again by clicking Bogomip.prefs again. ** Before you re-enter your details switch of your modem power then switch ** on again and reboot your Amiga to free up your line for re-connection. g) You can test your connection by choosing "Ping Bogomip" from the Bogomip Dashboard Menu under "Handy Bits", A window will open and repeat the same line 10 times and when finished you should see 0% packet loss at the end. If not your connection is bad i.e. bad line etc. h) NEWS & WWW will work as is. Voyager is also set up for many Aminet sites in different countries, but an FTP client (AmFTP) is also supplied. E-mail only needs you to start E-Mail and choose "config setup" from the "settings menu" then put your user ID (the bit before the @ in your e-mail address not your login name) where asked. You don't need your password as you enter it when prompted while downloading/uploading mail. Please read the excelent Guide supplied with this program in the AmiTCP:E-Mail/docs drawer and do as it says and shows. (its easy) To start any of the Net programs just choose it from the Dashboard. Asked for password? Note ------------------------ The amount of password prompts to expect changes between ISP's mine asks twice but I have found some that only ask once. What this means is when you log on your ISP's computer asks Net-Set for your login/user name password. Below is an example of your Net-Set talking to your ISP. ISP = What your ISP is sending to Net-Set. Info = Net-Set telling you what is happing. N-Set = What Net-Set is sending to ISP. Text in window Destcription of text in window ----------------- --------------------------------------------- ISP :> Username: <---- it wants your username i.e NOBBY Info :> Received username prompt N-Set:> Sent your username <---- Net-Set sends it ISP :> Password: <---- it wants your password i.e. nobby13 Info :> Received password prompt N-Set:> Sent your password <---- Net-Set sends it ISP :> "!*$!" <---- this mess is asking for your Slip command Info :> Received Slip blah blah blah..... N-Set:> Sent Slip command <---- Net-Set sends it ISP :> password: <---- its wants your passowrd again (asks twice) Info :> Received password prompt N-Set:> Sent your password <---- And so on etc etc etc...... You can easily find out how many times yours asks. First set up ISP.prefs as above and choose (2) to start with. Then choose Log On from the Dashboard and maximize the window that appears. Now watch for the Password: prompt and see how many times it comes up. If you get it wrong you will also notice that a certain block of text keeps appearing again and again which means you should change the setting. Modem Change Note ----------------- The AT code string is now set to "AT&F&D0L1" as default. This was because the original one did not agree with all modems it stopped at "Waiting for OK") so before you go using Modem Change give it a go as is. (US Robotics modem users you may need to set dip switches read Modem Help) If you log on and the window still stops at "Waiting for OK" then your modem AT code string needs changing. Read Modem.Help for a better explaination. (is that how you spell it? oh who cares) Read Modem.Help first from the Settings menu in Dashboard. You can re-run any of the above .pref files as well as Modem_Change again and again if you get anything wrong. (better than editing) The reason there are two .prefs files instead of keeping all in one file is incase you either change your password, login name or upgrade your Amiga to a higher CPU (i.e. 030 accelerater or get a Surf Squirrel). This way you only have to run User.prefs instead of having to enter all your ISP details agian. I think this is better but don't mind me. Now click "Help" from the Dashboard to find out what the Menus and Buttons do. ONCE YOU ARE HAPPY YOU CAN DELETE THE DRAWER YOU FIRST EXTRACTED THE FILES TOO. Extra useful programs:- Included with this suite are two datatypes (GIF & JPEG) plus a small file viewer called "fastview". All are found in the AmiTCP-4.0/tools drawer and Fastview can be activated from the Dashboard. READ THE FOLLOWING:- I would advise reading all the Doc's for each app found in their drawers in the AmiTCP-4.0 drawer to learn more about them. Read the conditions etc and thank your lucky stars that people like them are out there keeping the AMIGA alive and making yours and my life easy. Some of these are shareware which I had no involvement in and the authors should be rewarded as such (NOT ME) for their hard work and late nights. Please register where applicable so as to keep them from starving and keep the standard as high. Problems:- "AARRGGHH !! Help me Help me" Read the "Bogomip.help" file by selecting "Help" from the Dashboard. The file can also be found in the AmiTCP-4.0:Help drawer.
