Volumetics is a short word for ATMOSPHERICS, rain, dust, fog, moisture,
snow and all the other things that can and do float around in our
environment.  Volumetrics for the most part is the ability for lights to
cast shadows into these dust or atmospherics.  In most cases software
that is out there does not address the majority of the atmospheric
world, it generally does fog.

Its that simple.
