                          SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS

The Mastery Series programs require the following:

  1. IBM or Compatible computer with DOS 2.0 or higher.
  2. 512K RAM
  3. Any monitor (real-looking cards need EGA/VGA monitor)
  4. Hard drive or high-density floppy.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW TO READ THE INSTRUCTIONS

In the instructions, brackets have special meaning...

  <> ANGLE BRACKETS MEAN
Type in the text between the brackets and press ÄÙ (Enter).
WARNING: Do NOT type in the angle brackets!

Example: To start 7 Card Stud, enter < MSSTUD >.

  [] SQUARE BRACKETS MEAN
Press the letter, or one of the letters, between the brackets.

Example: Continue [Y/N]? Press Y or N for Yes or No.

All instructions assume that you know PC- or MS-DOS's simplest commands,
COPY, CHDIR or CD (change directory), MKDIR or MD (make directory). If
you do not, you should read your DOS reference for such commands now.

In instructions or help on screen, you may see the ^ before a key.
The ^ stands for the Control key, or, as it appears on your keyboard,
the Ctrl key. So, ^ means "hold down the Ctrl key and press the next
key." For instance, ^F5 means "hold down Ctrl and press F5."

In instructions or help on screen, you may see the @ before a key.
The @ stands for the Alt key. So, @ means "hold down the Alt key and
press the next key." For instance, @F5 means "hold down Alt and press F5."

In instructions or help on screen, there are several words that denote
the kind of information provided, as follows:

The following words denote kinds of information provided in help for
  the program:

ACCESS: This gives you the route to the feature. For example,

             ACCESS: Menu\Table Rules\Betting FROM GAME: Ctrl F7

This means from the Game Menu, choose Table Rules, then
Betting, or from the Game section, press Ctrl F7.

ENTRY: This tells you what kind of entry or what range of entries
             you can make, for example:

             ENTRY: 0.00 to 999999.99

This example tells you to make an entry of 0.00, 999999.99,
             or anything in between.

=========================================================================
========================= II.  GETTING STARTED ==========================
=========================================================================

MAKING A BACKUP COPY OF THE PROGRAM'S DISK(S)

Uses your ordinary backup procedures, for example, DOS's COPY or XCOPY
commands.

REMEMBER THAT UNDER YOUR LICENSE TO USE THE PROGRAM, AND UNDER
FEDERAL COPYRIGHT LAWS, THE UNREGISTERED VERSION IS THE ONLY VERSION
THAT YOU MAY COPY AND DELIVER TO SOMEONE ELSE. THE REGISTERED/COMMERCIAL
VERSIONS MAY BE COPIED FOR YOUR PERSONAL USE ONLY!

                        INSTALLING THE PROGRAM

Keeping the program and its files together is the only requirement of
installation.

The program uses several kinds of files, those ending in: OVR, PKR,
PKX, HLP. You should keep the program and its associated files
in one subdirectory.

                         STARTING THE PROGRAM

Log onto the drive that contains your installed program.

Example: If the program is on a disk in drive A:, enter < A: >.
If the program is on a hard drive C:, enter < C: >.

Change into the subdirectory that contains the program.

Example: If the program is in a subdirectory named POKER,
          enter < CD \POKER > or < CHDIR \POKER >.

To start the Mastery Series 7 Card Stud game:

          enter < MSSTUD >.

To start the Mastery Series 7 Card Stud HiLow Split game:

          enter < MSSTUDLO >.

To start the Mastery Series Texas Hold'em game:

          enter < MSTEXAS >.

                           START-UP SWITCHES

When you start the program, you can follow its name with one or more of
the following switches:

-S or /S Use [S]low screen writes (BIOS), avoiding direct writes
to the video RAM. The -S switch may be necessary for:

                  * Not-so-compatible Compatibles.

                  * Multi-tasking environments.

                  * Running the program in a DOS emulator on a non-IBM-
                    compatible machine.

-B or /B Force [B]lack and White for composite monitors or
monochrome monitors with color-graphics cards. If you
have a laptop or notebook computer with a flat (e.g.,
LCD) screen, you may need to use this -B switch.

-C or /C Force the recognition of a [C]olor monitor. The program
can automatically detect most color cards and monitors.
If you have a color system, but the program is coming up
in monochrome, then do one of the following:

                  * Try this -C switch.

                  * Use DOS's command MODE before starting the program,
                    that is, enter:

                      MODE CO80

MODE is an external DOS command, that is, it exists
as a file. So, you must be in the subdirectory that
contains MODE.COM, e.g., C:\DOS, or your PATH must
include that subdirectory. See your DOS manual.

-EGA or /EGA Force the recognition of an [EGA] card. Use this if you
have an EGA card and a color monitor, but the program is
running in monochrome. Some EGA cards are hard to detect.

-VGA or /VGA Force the recognition of a [VGA] card. Use this if you
have a VGA card and a color monitor, but the program is
running in monochrome. Some VGA cards are hard to detect.

-Ofile_name Force the program to recognize "file_name" as the overlay
file. Ordinarily, the overlay file's name consists of the
file name of the program with a file-name extension of
".OVR", and the overlay file resides in the same directory
as the program. If the overlay file has a different name
or a different directory, you must inform the program using
the -O switch. The "file_name" in the switch must be a
complete path and file name, including the drive name.
For instance, suppose you have the Stud program on
drive A: and you want to put the overlay file on drive B: in
a directory named \POKER\STUDHI. Then you must start the
                program as follows:

                  MSSTUD -OB:\POKER\STUDHI\MSSTUD.OVR

                NOTES:
                  (1) There is no space between the "-O" and the full
                path and file name.
                  (2) Your disk may not have a separate overlay file with
                the extension ".OVR".
                  (3) There is no reason except your limited disk space to
move the overlay file away from the program's directory and
                use the -O switch.

EXAMPLES:

  * If you have a VGA card and color monitor and the program is running
in monochrome, then start the program as follows:

    program_name -VGA

where "program_name" is the name of the program you are using,
  for instance, MSTEXAS, or MSSTUD.

  * If you are using a laptop or notebook computer with a flat (LCD)
screen, try starting the program as follows:

    program_name -B

    OR

    program_name -B -EGA

    OR

    program_name -B -EGA -S

  * If your laptop/notebook has a VGA, substitute -VGA for -EGA, as in:

    program_name -B -VGA

                             GETTING HELP.

There are three ways for you to get help. In the order of increasing
detail, they are:

  1) Look at the bottom line and any other text on screen.

There is always help on screen--just read what is in front of you.
The bottom line usually contains help. It tells you which keys to
     press to access main functions.

  2) Press the F1 key.

For context-sensitive help, press F1 anywhere in the program.
On-line help consists of pointed, summary information for your
current activity in the program. This help pops up on screen.

  3) Read the Manual.

The typeset manual is included with the Registered/Commercial version.
The manual includes detailed help on all subjects. It includes an
alphabetized reference section, overviews, tips, and appendices.
The manual covers several subjects that are not covered elsewhere.

                   OVERVIEW: WHERE TO START LOOKING

There are 2 main sections of the program, from which you can access all
the hundreds of features. The 2 main sections are: the Game area, and
collectively, the various report screens.

You enter the Game section when you first start the program. (You
may have to press the ESC, escape, key to pass a sign-on or license screen.)
To access the Game (Main) Menu, press ESC or F10. Read the help on screen
or press F1.

From the Game section, you enter the reports section by pressing F4, F5,
