The Digital Resume User's Manual (C) Copyright 1991 David Conger What is a Digital Resume? A Digital Resume is an interactive resume on a disk. It not only allows you to give your potential employer more information about you and your background, it GETS YOU NOTICED. Many companies receive such a huge volume of resumes that it is next to impossible to stand out in the crowd. I know of a major software vendor in the Seattle area that receives in excess of 2000 resumes a month! On average they have only 20 jobs open up in a given month. That means there are over 100 applicants for each and every job. In such a situation, the Digital Resume may be just what it takes to call attention to yourself in a positive way. The Digital Resume presents the same information that would normally be on your resume, but presents it in a way that is fresh and innovative. It focuses a potential employer's attention on you and it says that you are not afraid to find new and better ways to solve common problems. This program is NOT free! The Digital Resume is a Shareware program. If you find it useful, please send $10 to: David Conger 3831 South 12th St. Tacoma, WA 98405 Please don't sacrifice your integrity for a lousy $10. If you use this program, send me the money. I'll be adding your name to my mailing list so I can notify you of updates as they become available. Since this is Shareware, you may copy and distribute this program as long as you don't charge a fee for it. You must also include all of the files that are on this disk. The files are as follows: RESUME.EXE----------The Digital Resume MANUAL.TXT----------This manual MAKERESA.BAT--------A batch file to make a Digital Resume on a floppy in drive A: MAKERESB.BAT--------A batch file to make a Digital Resume on a floppy in drive B: None of these files may be altered in any way. In addition there are sample files that MUST be included that contain information on a fictitious job seeker, Fred Jobfinder. NAME.TXT--------Fred Jobfinder's name. INTRO.TXT-------A letter of introduction from Fred Jobfinder. ED.TXT----------Fred's educational background. WORK.TXT--------Fred's work history. SAMPLE.TXT------A sample of Fred's work. REF.TXT---------A list of Fred's references. OTHER.TXT-------A brief outline of Fred's other qualifications that might be relevant. PERSON.TXT------Fred's name, address, telephone number, etc. There is also a sample cover letter that you can use to send with your Digital Resume so that the personnel people know what to do with it when they get it. CVRLET.TXT----------A sample cover letter to accompany your Digital Resume. PRNTCVL.BAT---------A batch file that prints the cover letter. How to use the Digital Resume Use your favorite word processor to edit the information files that the Digital Resume uses. A sample set of information files are is included with the Digital Resume program for a fictitious job-hunter named Fred Jobfinder. ALL OF THESE FILES MUST BE PRESENT FOR THE DIGITAL RESUME TO WORK. All of these files MUST be saved in ASCII TEXT format. Almost every word processor can do this. If you don't know how, please consult your word processor user's manual. The first file to edit is NAME.TXT. It is a one line file that should contain your name. If there is more than one line in the file, the extra lines won't be read by the Digital Resume program. Next type a letter of introduction to your potential employer and save it in ASCII text format under the name of INTRO.TXT. To get the file to look as nice as possible when it is displayed by the Digital Resume, it is best to avoid such things as tab characters (use spaces instead) and to keep your right margin to something less than 75 characters. It is also recommended that you leave at least a 4 character left margin (filled with spaces) on the left. This is how the sample information files were put together. The rest of the files can be edited in the same manner. The information files are listed below: NAME.TXT--------Your name goes here. INTRO.TXT-------A letter of introduction from you. ED.TXT----------Your educational background. WORK.TXT--------Your work history. SAMPLE.TXT------A sample of your work. REF.TXT---------A list of your references. OTHER.TXT-------A brief outline of your other qualifications that might be relevant. PERSON.TXT------Your name, address, telephone number, etc. When editing SAMPLE.TXT, you may decide that you don't want your work samples in ASCII text format. In that case you can either edit the file to say "Printed work samples are included with this disk," or "Work samples provided upon request. Similarly, when editing REF.TXT, you may decide that you just want to say "References provided upon request" rather than to list them here. Once you have edited the information files, copy your Digital Resume onto a blank, formatted disk using the batch files MAKERESA.BAT or MAKERESB.BAT. MAKERESA.BAT makes a Digital Resume on a floppy in drive A: and MAKERESB.BAT makes a Digital Resume on a floppy in drive B:. Be sure that the disks that you use are blank and formatted. Finally, edit CVRLET.TXT until you are satisfied with it. You may either print it with your word processor or text editor, or you may use the batch file PRNTCVL.BAT to print it. If you use PRNTCVL.BAT to print your cover letter, make sure that CVRLET.TXT is saved in ASCII text format after you edit it. That's all it takes to create a Digital Resume! Good luck in your job search, and thank's for using The Digital Resume. --bye--
