It should also run under Windows 95 or OS/2 v2.1 or better, in a DOS Box. We strongly recommend that you install UNIVBE before you play Rally Challenge, especially if you wish to play the game in SVGA mode. It is availible from all good ftp sites, or from Scitech Software : World Wide Web : http://www.scitechsoft.com Internet/FTP : ftp.scitechsoft.com Compuserve : GO VESA (file library 12) America Online : Keyword VESA STARTING THE GAME After installation, run the SETUP program to configure sound card and video resolution. Sound card set-up is pretty standard, so I won't go on about it. To start the game, from the directory it was installed to, type RTEST You will then see the main menu. From here, you can start a race, or set option, such as graphics detail and music/sound volume. Starting a race : - Select the RACE option. - Select either Quick Race, Arcade or Phantom Race. - Press enter at the Car selection screen. - Select Automatic or Manual transmission. - Select a track to race on, using the Select Track option and the left and right cursor keys. - Select Practise to race. The race will now begin. It is recommended that you use the Automatic gear change option until you are familiar with the car controls. If you select the Quick Race or Phantom Race option, your car will sustain damage if you drive recklessly and crash into things. This will affect your cars performance. In Arcade mode your car is made from Virtual Rubber(TM), and therefore doesn't sustain damage. Camera Mode : There are two camera modes for external vie. They are fixed tracking and free tracking. Fixed tracking follows the path of the track, free tracking follows the car. The best way to see the difference is to try both. Fixed tracking is the default. Use F3 to change camera mode and F2 for internal car view. Keys : Up Arrow - Accelerate Down Arrow - Brake Left Arrow - Steer left Right Arrow - Steer right SPACE BAR - Hand brake CTRL - Down gear ( Manual ) Into reverse in automatic ALT - Up gear ( Manual ) Back into drive in automatic Z - Zoom In X - Zoom Out < or > - Spin viewing angle ( external view with fixed tracking ) - and + - re-size screen P - grab PCX screen shot ( will ruin your frame rate for a while ) F1 - Track detail F2 - Inside Car Mode F3 - camera mode F4 - Auto detail adjust ON/OFF F5 - Brake Bias forward F6 - Brake Bias backward Fuel : When in an external camera mode, the fuel gauge is located next to the gear indicator in the bottom right corner. Brake Bias : Brake bias affects the amount of braking the front and rear brakes do relative each other. Front bias will cause understeer under braking and rear bias will cause the cars tail to 'flick out' when cornering under brakes. SVGA Mode : From the DOS prompt, type SETUP. Select VIDEO resolution, then select SVGA(640x480). Select Save and Exit Again we strongly recommend that you obtain a copy of UNIVBE v5.1 or later before playing the game in SVGA mode. NOTE : SVGA mode requires a Pentium system to run effectively. Multi-player : This demo has serial link ability, but no modem or network option (yet). To race via serial cable, ensure your cable is plugged into both machines. Go to the MULTIPLAYER option, then select SERIAL. One player should select STANDBY, and the other CONNECT. The player to chooses CONNECT is the master, and the player who chooses STANDBY is the slave. Both players should setup there cars ( type, gears, damage, etc ) and the master should select a track. Select DONE when ready, and the race will begin. The OPTIONS menu choice allows you to set your comm port, and baud rate for data transfer. Try the highest speed first, and if you have difficulty, reduce the speed. You should also try running the game in VGA mode, and with detail turned down. Windows 95 : To run Rally Challenge, lanuch a DOS box, and follow the regular DOS instruction. You may require 16 Meg to run it. Native Win95 version coming soon.
