Here are the basic DOCs for Hi-Octane. From: lovett@nevada.edu (Trust No One) & rthomson@pomona.edu Basic Keys: Z or V Machine Guns X or B Missile Launchers C or SPACE Charge Up Turbo-Boost (Hold Down) P Pause, change settings - can change detail & sound options Arrow Up Accelerate Arrow Down Decelerate Left / Right Steering On The Gravis Game Pad: (Only Joystick I've used thus far) Blue: Missiles Red: Machine Gun Yellow: Turbo-Boost (Hold Down) Realeasing the Turbo Boost button early still gives you somewhat of a boost, how much depends on how charged up you have the booster. Views: 1 In the cockpit 2-4 Behind the car view (2 closer, 4 farther away) Stuff on your screen: Green Bar: Shield/Armor (Lose this & die) Yellow Bar: Missile Ammo - Note: Occasionally when I was empty of ammo, I was unable to turbo-boost, don't know if this is a bug or what, but something to keep note of if you want to win. Blue Bar: Your Fuel, run out and you have to wait to be picked up just as if you died, and the repair ship doesn't give you that much more so if you run out, make sure it's near the pit stop. Both Weapons can have up to 3 charge-ups, improving the damage they do. The Speed Boost charge ups decrease the time it takes them to charge up, as well as the time it takes them to cool down for re-charge, giving you more boost per mile, necessary if you want to win. The Thin bar below your fuel is the speed-boost bar. Below that is your speed meter :) The machine guns heat up (the red bar that slowly grow while you're pouring it into your foe, found beneath your missile ammo bar), but cools down quick. You have unlimited ammo for this baby, so don't be stingy. When someone blows up all sorts of goodies scatter on the track (including some of their power ups, and a speed boost power up regardless of whether or not they had any), sometimes it's not a good idea to hang around and grab the goodies, you decide. Triangles: Blue: +10% fuel Yellow: +10% Ammo Green: +10% armor Round Gem Powerups of the same colors give you 100% or 200% depending on the numbers on them. On the track display in the lower right, a blue bar represents a re-fueling area, a green bar represents a re-armoring area, and so on. This lets you quickly plan for a detour to rearm or refuel or whatever if you need it, as these stations are usually a bit of a detour. This also means that if you don't need the fuel or armor or ammo, don't go to these stops, as on the later levels especially, it is quicker to not go to this places as they are off to the side. Note that there are sorta hidden areas on some tracks. They aren't really hidden, just places you can go "off-the-beaten track" for x-tra power-ups and the like. Another strategy hint - I find sometimes that the best thing to do is just turbo, turbo, turbo. Right away i try to get out in front of the pack by turboing right away and as quickly as possible. if you can get in front, KEEP turboing whenever you can, and you can usually stay out front. Another hint - i find that when a car is tailing you and plastering your butt with mini-gun slugs, there's not much you can do (no rear weapons :( )... If you can't outrun him, sometimes the best hing to do is pull a quick 360 and let him get out front. The cars have awesome turning capabilities so you don't lose much ground pulling this maneouver, just enough to let him slide out in front. When he's out frot, let him have it with guns and missiles. Another note - missiles don't nmeed don't need a lock-on to hit, obviously. If the opponent is right out in front, just let loose with a salvo. Super Car: Haven't nailed down what causes this, but it's maxes you out for a short time. I've been in first place every time I've gotten it, it might be the first person to 3 laps, dunno - experiment yourself. 180/360 waa-hoo! - Happens when you do a 180 or 360 through the air, try it it's a scream! When you are behind a car, a target box will appear around them. It will start out as green, with four triangles on the four sides. With time, the four triangles will creep towards the center. When they reach the box, the targetting box turns red and the target is locked. Missiles will now track the target. Also, below the targetting box is a horizontal bar. This is the target's armor. When it is gone, so is the opponent! Note that if there is only a little armor left, don't waste a missile, just blast with the mini-gun. * - one time I saw a message pop up saying Autopilot...has anyone figured out how to do this?, or if it really is something?
